The COMPEERS research study is a 24 month feasibility study of Contingency Management and Peer Support to promote attendance, increase treatment engagement, and improve outcomes for people with dual diagnoses of psychosis and drug/alcohol problems (DDp).


In the COMPEERS study we aim to test the feasibility of a future large trial evaluating whether modest financial incentives encourage people with 'dual diagnoses' of psychosis (a serious mental illness) and drug/alcohol problems to attend weekly peer support worker appointments.


This assistant psychologist will join a strong research team including clinical psychologists; experts in the field of addictions and psychosis; lived experience consultants; statistician; and health economist.


The role will support the day-to-day running of the project, including liaising with clinical teams and other parts of the system, recruitment of participants, training of peer support workers, collection and recording of data, and supporting the analysis and write-up.


  • To support wider research team in the delivery of this feasibility trial across multiple community mental health teams (CMHT's).
  • To support the recruitment of participants from local CMHT's and liaising with CMHT staff throughout the course of the study.
  • To support the recruitment of our peer support team and to work closely alongside these peer support workers.
  • To help develop a training and resource package for the study, with primary focus on contingency management and specialist DDp peer support.
  • The post will entail a substantial degree of independent working and autonomy, working across the CMHT's, where there may not be daily or direct support from a practitioner psychologist.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate both individual and group clinical interventions as required by the service, across community settings under the supervision of a practitioner psychologist.
  • To be responsible for collecting, recording and analysing information concerning clients' mental health and substance use. regularly updating team databases and contributing to the reporting of identified service and trial KPIs.
  • To be responsible for keeping up to date and accurate clinical notes of own activities.
  • To assist team formulation and reflective practice with multidisciplinary staff as required.
  • To contribute towards the development of the research project and service, attending meetings, sharing feedback and updates and taking minutes when required.

  • Key Responsibilities:
KR 1 Clinical and Client Care

  • To schedule and provide assessments for participants across the CMHT's including psychometric, neuropsychological, behavioural, observational, semistructured interview and indirect assessments under the supervision of a practitioner psychologist as required.
  • To assist the psychologists in the development of individual or group clinical materials or training materials, and in addition to develop such materials independently as falls within own degree of competence.
  • To plan, schedule and provide group psychological interventions including psychoeducation, skillsbased and transdiagnostic therapy groups under the supervision of a practitioner psychologist as required.
KR 2 Contributing to team or service clinical functioning
