Part-time, fixed-term contract from April 2024 until December 2024

Working hours: 37.5 hours a week split between field and lab work


Salary:
£12 per hour.

About BigSis

Purpose and responsibilities

The research assistant has a central and varied role within BigSis.

This will involve working out of NIAB East Malling, Kent, alongside the research and development, Insect production and Field trial aspects of BigSis' Sterile insect technique solutions.

You will assist the entomologists within their fields; This will involve laboratory and field work, including driving to field sties to deploy traps and collect fruits.

Tasks will include maintenance of SWD cultures, following protocols, maintaining experiments on SWD egg laying, counting adult flies in traps and accurate data and diary entry, working as part of a vibrant and friendly team, reporting to line-manager.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out experiments to produce and test sterile insects according to agreed protocols
  • Replacing and scoring insect traps
  • Undertaking releases of sterile male insects in designated release points
  • Writing scientific and client reports across the season
  • Communicating to team leads when issues or problems arise
  • Working as part of a team to complete the releases or trap changes on each day.
Qualifications and experience

  • An interest and some experience of working with insects, such as field ecology, lab experiments and colony rearing
  • Must be diligent and organised, with accurate data entry abilities and strong attention to detail
  • Experience in organising, prioritising and completing work to high standards and to tight deadlines
  • A full UK driving licence would be advantageous
  • Willing to work for some of the time in hot and humid environments
  • Capable of carrying out moderately intense physical work
