    Job overview

    The Estates Department is looking for a Mechanical Craftsperson with a background preferably gained in building services or healthcare environment to join the Maintenance Team.

    The vacancy will be based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester; however the role can include work on any of the Trust sites.

    Main duties of the job

    The successful applicant will be required to carry out planned and reactive mechanical works inclusive of repair, maintenance and minor improvement to the building and hospital facilities, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for staff and visitors.

    Ideally, candidates should possess a relevant mechanical qualification of NVQ level 3 or equivalent C&G and have completed a structured training programme, however, a development role will be considered for the right applicant with additional training given to enable them to fully meet the person specification.

    The successful applicant will require good communication skills. An empathetic approach to staff and patients, be adaptable, willing to learn new skills and be able to work independently as well as part of the team. The applicant must have the physical ability and agility to carry out manual handling.

    Essential criteria

  • Availability for on call duties
  • Subject to availability, undertaking overtime
  • Ability to work at height using access from ladders/scaffold
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Hold full current driving license including trailer towing element
  • Desirable criteria

  • IPAF License
  • Manual handling training
  • Health & safety awareness for prefabricated scaffold towers
  • Training and Qualification

    Essential criteria

  • Completion of a structured training program in a suitable Mechanical trade related field for a minimum period of 3 years
  • A minimum qualification level of NVQ level 3
  • Adequate knowledge of and within the preceding three years training for first aid
  • Health & Safety awareness training
  • Asbestos awareness training
  • Desirable criteria

  • Refrigeration qualification
  • AP Qualifications in relevant area
  • Controls trained
  • BTEC, ONC in Mechanical Engineering

    Essential criteria

  • A minimum of one years' post qualification experience working in a mechanical maintenance environment
  • Good awareness of health & safety legislation and experience of working to safe systems of work
  • Must have read and understand the HSE Approved Code of Practice for Legionella Management
  • Completion of a structured training programme in Mechanical engineering for a minimum of three years
  • Knowledge of: - Hot water systems, steam systems, heating and ventilations systems
  • Experience of working on Building Management Systems
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working in an acute hospital environment
  • Qualified to work on natural gas installations
  • Worked as a competent person on the following systems: - Sterilisers, Washer Disinfectors, Medical gases, Ventilation systems, Water treatment systems, Refrigeration systems
