    Job Summary

    The role of Risk Lead – Corporate Nursing and Clinical Services is a diverse and multi-faceted role that requires a high level of attention to detail, experience, curiosity, and expertise.

    The objectives of the role will provide the organisation with a clear understanding of clinical risks, how they could impact patients, donors, and their families and how we are proactively working to reduce these risks.

    You will act as an essential part of the Corporate Nursing and Clinical Governance team and as an individual autonomous practitioner leading and facilitating activities and workplans to support delivery of the organisation's clinical services, improve patient and donor safety and address health inequalities.

    Working closely with a wide mix of internal and external stakeholders and different departments within NHSBT, the role is integral to NHSBTs clinical safety programme and as such is a satisfying and rewarding role.

    Main duties of the job

    This is a central role in NHSBT supporting the Chief Nurse/ Corporate Clinical Governance Lead, Senior Management Team, and staff at all levels as an internal consultant and overall expert on identifying and managing clinical risks, ensuring effective governance, compliance and assurance. This expert advice feeds into the risk framework and governance structures across Clinical Services, Nursing and the wider NHSBT. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and developing a strategy for Clinical Risk Management within Nursing and Clinical Services
  • Working in collaboration with the Clinical Audit team to triangulate risk, audit output and incident data to support a risk based clinical audit programme.
  • Providing business partnering support to key senior leaders / decision-makers and provide oversight of their risk management activity to support operational decision making and delivery.
  • Supporting the Chief Nurses and Corporate Clinical Governance Lead with developing a positive culture of risk management and reporting; overseeing the risk framework within Clinical Services, Nursing and Corporate Clinical Governance
  • The post holder will also support the delivery of the Corporate Risk Strategy– including training, coaching, and mentoring staff, as well as identifying and proposing revisions to the strategy and its policies
  • Overseeing and maintaining the online Risk Register for Nursing, Clinical Services and Corporate Clinical Governance and the SharePoint area for clinical risk.
  • You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice

    About You

    Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience in senior management within politically sensitive environments like the NHS, coupled with a deep understanding of scientific and/or healthcare communities.
  • Proven experience of identifying data trends and causative factors of issues that could potentially become organisational risks.
  • Writing and presenting board level material. Inclusive of experience of developing policies and strategy.
  • Experience in managing and motivating people to deliver corporate strategy and business objectives.
  • Significant understanding and communication of good risk management, assurance, compliance, and governance principles
  • Proficient in specialized software like Pentana, QPulse, and Datix, as well as Microsoft Office tools
  • Qualifications and Training

  • Educated to master's level in relevant area (e.g. healthcare science, nursing,) or equivalent level of significant work experience at a senior level in a specialist area
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
