Accountancy Assistant

£17 per hour


Akton Recruitment are working with a local authority to recruit an Accountancy Assistant to work on a 3 month contract.

As an Accountancy Assistant you will assist the Senior Fund Accountant and Head of Finance and Risk with all aspects of budgeting, financial control, closing of accounts, maintenance of accounting systems and provide advice to other sections within the fund and scheme employers of the Fund whilst also maintaining records and monitoring the collection of contributions income.


Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Liaise with internal and external Senior Officers, Senior Fund Accountant, Head of Finance & Risk, Investment Managers, employers, bank and custodian service providers.
  • Responsible for discussing complex and contentious information with employers from both public and private sector which would include any discrepancies with monies paid by employers to us.
  • Exchange of complex and varied information with internal and external providers' giving advice on a number of financial related queries.
  • Be responsible for training employees and for allocating and checking work of employees.
  • Be a member of a team maintaining the accounting and investment records of the Pension Fund and processing all related transactions.
  • Reconcile income and expenditure transactions to ensure the Fund's accounts fully and accurately reflect all activities including bank and currency accounts, employers' contributions and returns and investment transactions.
  • Maintain and journal currency and cash income transactions into the accounting system. Journal property statements quarterly.
  • Input transactions onto computerised trading or bank cash movement systems.
  • Record, monitor and reconcile income received including contributions income and property income.
  • Assist the Settlements Officer with Settlements function liaising with custodians/brokers as required.
  • Assist with the preparation of the monthly budget monitoring reports and working papers for the Head of Finance and Risk.
  • Assist the Valuations Officer with the Valuations process (weekly and monthly).
  • Assist Senior Fund Accountants with the process of the production of the FRS102 exercise, liaising as appropriate with employers and the Fund's actuary.
  • Monitor sundry debtors system, reconciling with financial accounts, and ensuring appropriate action is taken on outstanding debts.
  • Liaise with employers on contribution and accounting related issues.
  • Assist the Settlements Officer with preparing the VAT submission to Wirral.
  • Provide general support to Head of Finance and Risk, Senior Fund Accountant and other senior officers as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 5 GCSE or equivalent including Maths & English (Essential).
  • Full AAT or equivalent (Essential).
  • Part CCAB, or equivalent (Desirable).
  • Experience in a finance environment dealing with finance functions (Essential).
  • Experience of input and interrogation of computer systems (Essential).
  • Experience of reconciliation work (Essential).
  • Experience of recording financial information (Essential).
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines and working under pressure (Essential).
  • Experience of working to regulatory Financial Guidelines (Essential).
  • Experience in an accountancy/audit environment (Desirable).
  • Experience in an pensions/investments environment (Desirable).
  • Experience dealing with banking issues, e.g., cheque reconciliation, inputting bank instructions (Desirable)
  • Experience of preparing journals (Desirable).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of accounting and banking issues (Essential).
  • Excellent numeracy skills (Essential).
  • Good written & verbal communication skills (Essential).
  • Good organisational skills (Essential).
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (Essential).
  • Knowledge of Pensions/investments (Desirable).
  • Ability and commitment to work flexibly and independently to meet internal and external deadlines (Desirable).
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft products (Desirable).
  • A working knowledge of Oracle Accounting software (Desirable).
