The West Midlands Area Incident team is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated team player who loves being involved in the high tempo environment of incident response.

You'll be responsive, flexible and able to adapt to changing priorities.

In this role you will
Lead the teams Emergency Planning portfolio, whilst providing support for the other portfolios (Tactical First Response, Training & Exercising, Flood Incident, Environment Management)

  • Receive full training to become an Area Base Controller or Planning Officer within the team
  • Help the team coordinate the tactical first response of incidents within office hours, ensuring appropriate timely escalation and deescalation of incidents
  • Provide support to other duty officers through assurance of response and sharing situational awareness
  • Support the planning and coordination of incident response activities such as building resilience, training staff, working with our professional partners, and post incident reviews
  • Contribute to and attend the Area Incident Management Programme Board
  • Produce local technical/operational documentation such as processes, operational instructions and other information to support incident management operations or ways of working


You will be required to have an incident role outside of tactical first response and be available to respond to incidents.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • The West Midlands Area Incident Team is at the very heart of incident response, delivering activities that support the readiness, resilience, recovery and review of our incident management activities. We help provide tactical first response to all incident types, and deal with the increasing threats and natural hazards resulting from the climate and ecological emergency. We coordinate and assure all incident management activity, including training and exercising, professional partner engagement and deliver core preparation activities.
  • Experience/skills required
  • Ability to support tactical and strategic incident planning and response activities by providing incident expertise in Emergency Planning
  • Able to provide expert incident advice for training and exercising
  • Can work nationally with relevant teams to support incident management activities
  • Good leadership skills the role holder may be asked to take on the role of Delivery Lead for a specific incident management role
  • Experience of working collaboratively with customers and partners
  • An understanding, and experience of, embedding a continuous improvement culture
  • Able to demonstrate you are team player who is willing to adapt to changing priorities to achieve a common goal
  • Ability to effectively manage own time, development, health, safety and wellbeing, whilst supporting others in the team to do the same identifying when to seek support from line management or peers

  • This role will primarily be based in either Sentinel House (Fradley), Riversmeet House (Tewkesbury), Hafren House (Shrewsbury), Aqua House (Birmingham) or Stafford. Travel between locations will occasionally be required.

Interviews are likely to be held via video conference during the week commencing 12th June and will include a capability-based interview and exercise to a panel of incident management staff.
