    We are seeking skilled and compassionate individuals to join the new NHS Children and Young People's Gender Service (London) in the role of Specialist Clinical /Counselling /Applied Psychologist. This could be on a full time or part time basis, permanent or a secondment. Please specify in your supporting information your preferred options.

    This is a round of recruitment specifically aimed at Child Psychotherapists who are due to qualify in September 2024. In order to be considered, you must:

    • Have completed and passed all elements of your training with the exception of your final placement review and doctoral thesis
    • Be on track for submission of your doctoral thesis as per your course requirements
    In exceptional circumstances, we will consider applications who have had an unforeseen delay in the completion of the their doctoral thesis but are on track for the completion of all other elements of their doctoral programme.

Main duties of the job Practitioner Health and Educational Psychologists will also be considered for this role if they are able to demonstrate significant experience within a CYP mental health setting and document the equivalent level of training in an appropriate therapeutic model, either as a core part of training, additional qualification or substantial number of short courses.

    The post holder will provide a specialist psychology service to the NHS Children and Young People's Gender Service (London), including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes. Applicants should have experience of delivering high quality, evidence-based care to children and young people.

About us Following the recommendations of The Cass Review Interim Report, two new nationally networked services led by specialist children's tertiary care providers are being established. The Southern Hub, based in London, is delivered by a partnership of Evelina London Children's Hospital (part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust), Great Ormond Street Hospital and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

    The Northern Hub is delivered by a partnershipof Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust). This role is based in the Southern Hub.

    • Entry-level qualification in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) that has been accepted by the ACP for purposes of professional registration
    • Registered with the ACP as Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist
    Experience/Knowledge Essential
    • oExperience of receiving clinical supervision across a range of client needs.
    • oExperience of psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature relevant to the needs of CYP with Gender Diversity
    • oExperience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and / or lived experience.
    • oExperience of developing and carrying out research projects.
    • oTheoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment of mental health conditions common in young people with gender diversity
    • oKnowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics.
    • oKnowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.
    • oDoctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis.
    • oKnowledge of factors affecting acceptability and accessibility of mental health care.

    Skills/Abilities Essential
    • oTo deliver psychological therapy across cultural and other differences.
    • oTo select and administer specialist psychological assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources.
    • oTo communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information.
    • oTo plan and schedule assessment and interventions for individual clients and groups and carers, and for meetings such as CPA and case reviews.
    • oTo plan allocation of tasks to assistant psychologists.
    • oTo be skilled in the administration of psychometric and neuropsychological tests, including those that require complex manipulation of test materials.
    • oWell-developed IT skills including entry and analysis of research data.
    • oAbility to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to effective team functioning and holding team roles
    • oAbility to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate.
    • oAbility to maintain concentration and to remain in restricted positions for long periods during observations, assessments and psychological interventions, and to deal with unexpected interruptions or changes during these.
    • oAbility to manage emotionally stressful situations such as working with victims of abuse or trauma, or with people who engage in severe self-harming or aggressive behaviour.
    • oAbility to manage verbal aggression and hostility directed at self.
