It's an exciting time for Reading having successfully been awarded funding to coordinate and accelerate action on air quality matters.

This Principal role is an amazing opportunity to work across service areas working to improve air quality in Reading.


We are seeking an enthusiastic, ambitious and motivated individual to lead on Air Quality and contribute to delivering our vision and values whilst protecting the quality of life of our residents.

About the role

  • Providing technical advice to internal teams, including planners, highways engineers, environment, Public Health and Innovation teams.
  • Coordinating Reading Borough Council's existing projects and activities across Planning, Public Health, Highways, Transport, Sustainability, and Public Protection and develop this into a programme of work that together contributes to air quality objectives.
  • Work with our Localities Planning, Major Infrastructure and Highway Operations teams to develop Capital projects to reduce air quality issues in specific hotspots.
  • Seek opportunities for external funding for air quality projects to support the LTP and AQAP.
  • Interacting with other stakeholders and customer groups will be essential and you will be the main point of contact for freedom of information requests, Councillor contacts.
  • You will implement an Electric Vehicle Charging scheme for Reading.
  • You will support and report to the Community Protection Group Manager and will be required to make operational decisions and work across functions to find solutions to problems.
There will be the requirement for some work outside of normal office hours to attend public meetings as required. You will need a flexible approach to your work.

About you

  • Extensive experience and technical knowledge so to advise colleagues, organisations and the public on air quality issues.
  • Good communication (both verbally and in writing) and IT skills are essential.
  • Ability to continuously improve working practices and lead on projects.
  • You must have up to date knowledge of relevant legislation, codes and best practice.
  • You must be able to coordinate existing activities being undertaken within different services across Reading Borough Council and develop a programme of work that contributes to improving air quality outcomes.
  • You must have experience of securing funding, developing and leading on the implementation of air quality improvement projects and initiatives.
  • You will be aware of plans, policies, and strategies to integrate action on air quality into Reading's existing activities and influence the activities of others.
  • You have experience of running AQ monitoring networks and data management
  • Knowledge of Electric vehicle charging schemes and their implementation is ideal.
