Description

As an Assembly Fitter, you will be required to carry out in-process and final de-burring, testing, inspection and assembly activities on manufactured components in order to meet customer quality and delivery requirements.

British Engines Group Company, Michell Bearings, designs and manufactures hydrodynamic bearings for the marine, defence and industrial sectors.

Michell Bearings revolutionised ship building and sea transportation with the invention of the tilting pad bearing over 100 years ago and operates from sites in South Shields (UK), and Bangalore (India), with offices in the USA and Germany.


What you'll be doing

  • Deburring and dressing of machined components using a variety of powered and nonpowered tools, in preparation for final inspection
- ensuring component cleanliness

  • Carrying out various testing of manufactured and assemble components, including fluid gravity tests and pressure testing using various methods
  • Carrying out checks of the components for adherence to drawings using a variety of inspection equipment including micrometers, surtronics, vernier calipers etc
  • Assisting in identifying and utilising the most effective and efficient method of checking components
  • Identifying nonconforming items via the company's NCR system and maintenance of inspection status
  • Recording quality data where planned
  • Ensuring component traceability/identification is present and correct
  • Ensuring documentation is accurate and maintained to a high standard
  • Ensuring quality system procedures are being adhered to and are operating effectively
  • Ensuring 5S principles are applied to the quality control department and standards are sustained to audit requirements
  • Demonstrating a positive approach to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) through good working practices, housekeeping and correct use of PPE

Who we are looking for


To apply, you must be time served in a mechanical engineering discipline with ideally a minimum of 5 years' experience of working in a machine shop or a similar engineering environment.

Preferably you will also have experience of assembly fitting on engineering precision equipment as well as having knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic pipe-work assemblies.

You must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings, quality plans and specifications. The ability to use inspection and test equipment are also essential.


We're looking for someone who has excellent communication and organisation skills, as well as self-motivator with a hands on approach.

Being able to work independently as well as part of a team is essential.

A full UK driving licence is also a must.
