    Description
    Quarries produce a wide range of materials for use in industry and construction. These include; rocks and stone of all types, sand and gravel and other minerals and materials. Many quarries have ancillary plants producing asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and concrete products.The Operations Manager is responsible for leading, managing and directing an aggregates operational management team and achieving excellent day to day performance levels in the areas of health and safety, environmental compliance, cost control, product quality and plant reliability at all operations within the area of control.The role also involves liaising with Commercial Managers to deliver production plans that fully provide for customers' needs whilst minimising operational cost. It also involves enhancing the long-term profitability of our operations through strategic development, best practice, capital investment and employee development.
    Key Responsibilities
    Health and Safety
  • Ensure all sites operate in compliance with Mines & Quarries Act 1954, Quarries Regulations 199, and Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and operate at the highest practicable levels.
  • Ensure all direct reports deliver required health & safety management activity to minimise the risk of accidents; including visible felt leadership, safety observations, near miss reports, site liaison meetings and ensure all accidents are recorded and investigated with remedial actions set to minimise the risk of re-occurrence
  • Environmental
  • Ensure sites operate in accordance with all planning and environmental requirements and action plans are delivered to achieve the highest practicable level of environmental compliance.
  • Ensure all environmental incidents and NCR's are recorded and investigated, with remedial actions set to minimise risk of re-occurrence
  • Leadership
  • Provide leadership to the area teams ensuring that operational goals and expectations are understood, delivery plans are agreed and set in place and ensure the operational management team is adequately resourced and competent to carry out roles
  • Compliance
  • Ensure all statutory legislation and company rules are adhered to with respect to all operational activities.
  • Ensure purchasing controls and procedures are adhered to guarantee costs are accounted for within the correct period and ensure that all contractors and suppliers are compliant with statutory legislation and company rules
  • Operations
  • Achieve optimum production levels in line with commercial activity at the lowest operation cost.
  • Work continuously to improve operational efficiency .
  • Working with Technical Department, ensure that the highest product quality levels are achieved at the most efficient operational cost
  • Establish and maintain cross-functional working relationships with relevant functions e.g. operations and logistics to ensure operational procedures meet set quality and customer service levels at the most efficient operational cost Monitor and report business performance through agreed reporting measures
  • Capital Projects
  • Plan and deliver CAPEX within requirements as agreed with Area Operations Manager, Area General Manager and Regional Director
  • Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
    You will be required to have a minimum of SHE Level 6 in a Health & Safety discipline or equivalent. An honours degree in a numerical discipline and/or be DAPS qualified would be an advantage.

    You will have extensive relevant operational experience in a similar role and extensive line management experience within multi-site operations. You will also have the ability to drive profit generation, optimise efficiency and quality and develop Quarry Managers through strong leadership skills and persuasion and inspiration.

    You will have an energetic "hands on" approach and have the ability to manage competing deadlines by estimating time frames and monitoring own progress; the ability to anticipate problems and consider a solution and the ability to negotiate and work collaboratively with colleagues on both a formal and informal level.

    You will be a self-starter who is commercially focused and responds appropriately on their own to improve outcomes and process's and assumes responsibility for their own performance by demonstrating drive and initiative. You will have strong general business knowledge and awareness, be an excellent communicator with an analytical approach to work and have the ability to work accurately at a detailed level. You will also have excellent interpersonal, strong team ethics and strong goal orientation skills with a flexible attitude and be open to change.
