    Job summary

    The Rheumatology Department at South Tees comprises a unified Outpatient Unit and Day Unit. There is access to inpatient beds and integrated Rehabilitation facilities, including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, orthotics and clinical psychology. Three consultants provide the service at Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.

    Main duties of the job

    The appointee will be encouraged to develop their own area of special interest and to take part in teaching, education and research activities at both hospitals. The department is a major contributor to the undergraduate programme for medical students. There is an active Research & Development programme, part of the Comprehensive Research Network. Current research projects include systemic sclerosis, RA and DMARD/biologic therapies, osteoporosis and biomechanics. Research is supported by two Research Nurses and a Clinical Trials doctor. The department has excellent links with colleagues in primary care, radiology, immunology and orthopaedics.

    About us

    The consultant team is supported by a Specialist Registrar, Foundation trainees, a GP registrar and specialist nurse and pharmacist team. The department runs an open-access Bone Densitometry service and has its own musculoskeletal ultrasound scanner. Consultants each run one outreach clinic in the community. Specialist clinics are held for metabolic bone disease, paediatric/adolescent rheumatology, connective tissue diseases and combined clinics with orthopaedics.

  • Applicants should possess full GMC registration, MRCP and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
