Description
The purpose of the role is to teach clinical nursing skills in a range of settings and to
facilitate the integration of students' clinical practice with their academic studies.

To enhance the reputation of the Sunderland School of Nursing as a centre of
excellence by engaging with teaching, reach-out and research programmes in
nursing and health related topics.


Key Responsibilities

and Accountabilities:


Faculty Specific:

  • Support innovation and development of placement learning for the
programme through effective communication

  • Setting/marking programme work, practical sessions, supervisions, OSCEs
providing appropriate, timely feedback to students.

  • Contribute to the enhancement of quality in teaching, development of
curricula and innovative teaching methods in the Faculty.

  • Oversee the continuous improvement of the programme and placement
portfolio, ensuring the programme meets the internal, external and NMC
quality drivers.

  • Lead on employability aspects of the programme through partnership
working, with academic and external partners.

  • Act as an Academic Assessor
  • Contribute to the research activity of the School/Faculty
  • Participate in committee work that affects the running and development of
facilities, policies and procedures within the School/Faculty/University

  • Represent the School/Faculty to raise the external profile by establishing
close working relationships with the local, national and academic nursing
community so as to enhance the student experience.

  • Provision of pastoral support to students at all levels
  • You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not
included above, consistent with the role

Individuals carry out a range of duties and have responsibility taken from the

following. Whilst it is not anticipated that all of the activities listed below will

be covered by one individual, it is expected that over time all individuals will

make a balanced contribution to the three areas of academic activity

Academic Practice

  • Agree and manage own teaching, research, reachout and academic
management/administration responsibilities, with guidance from a mentor if
required.

  • Teach as a member of a teaching team in a developing capacity within an
established programme of study.

  • Teach in a developing capacity in a variety of settings from small group
tutorials to large lectures.

  • Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques.
  • Identify learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
  • Ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the
defined learning objectives.

  • Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance.

discourse and rational thinking.

  • Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them
with learning problems.

  • Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and
progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive

  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and
delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback_,_ including peer review of
teaching.

  • Develop and implement personal research and reachout plans.
  • Conduct individual and/or collaborative research and reachout_ _projects.
  • Contribute to writing proposals for external funding for research and/or reach
- out activities and contribute to the subsequent delivery of projects that are
funded.

  • Disseminate the outcomes of research and/or reachout through publication,
presentation or exhibition.

academic discipline and, if appropriate, also at the forefront of the relevant

Pastoral Care

  • Use listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive
issues concerning students and provide support.

  • Appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances.
  • Act as personal tutor, giving first line support.
  • Refer students as appropriate to
