    Rotational Pharmacist, Band - Pharmacy
    Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
    We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our pharmacy team as rotational band 6 pharmacists.

    This role will allow you to join our supportive development programme, including rotations through dispensaries, medicines information, aseptic and manufacturing services (including chemotherapy and TPN), mental health and oncology.

    In addition, daily ward visits to core clinical specialities will support your clinical development to prepare you for a career in hospital pharmacy.

    During the first year of practice, you will be supported by an individualised mentorship programme to build a strong foundation of skills and knowledge.

    You will then undertake a fully-funded post-graduate clinical diploma, opening opportunities for further personal and professional progression of your pharmacy career, including independent prescribing in the future.

    Within your rotations, you will have the opportunity to gain experiences of undertaking projects outside of clinical work, such as QI projects and teaching, developing you into a well-rounded pharmacist with a range of skills.

    You will rotate between both GHT sites, with a base site for contributing to our well supported on-call service, currently a 1 in 12 rota including a £1,000 per annum enhancement.

    This is an ideal opportunity for current trainee pharmacists or a qualified pharmacist wishing to start a career in hospital pharmacy.

    Responsible for fulfilling the pharmacist's role in dispensary, manufacturing, medicines information and clinical pharmacy services in order to promote safe, rational, effective & economic use of medicines.

    4 year Vocational Masters with one years postgraduate competency assessment with examination to enter the register.

    • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
    • The Pharmacists will take part in a rotation which involves working mainly in Dispensary, Medicines information, Mental Health, Manufacturing unit and Oncology. While working in these sections they will have a daily ward visit to carry out the Clinical Pharmacy service.

    Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust (GHT) is a large NHS trusts, with two sites; Located on the fringes of the Cotswolds, the county is easily accessible by road/rail networks to both Birmingham (45 miles) & Bristol (32 miles).

    This puts Gloucestershire within easy reach of both metropolitan areas and beautiful countryside.

    GHT has many support networks in place to ensure staff well-being, including a specialist well-being hub, exercise and activity classes and sports teams.

    GHT also fully supports the NHS Green Plan.

    The pharmacy department has approximately 200 staff across both sites, and provides dispensary services, medicines information, procurement services and a full clinical service to wards.

    There is a regular free shuttle bus allowing easy transport between hospitals, both of which are located in the city/town centres with access to shops and cafes.

    Pharmacy is committed to supporting the Trust to deliver its vision of best care for everyone, we strive to provide the whole team with the necessary skills and ongoing support to make a real difference to patient care, including a program to develop prescribing roles.

    We are at the forefront of many exciting projects including the recently introduced electronic prescribing system, a pharmacist led orthopaedic admission service and many projects to encourage the sustainable use of medicines within the Trust.

    Clinical Pharmacy
    Review prescriptions to ensure they are legal, safe, cost-effective, clinically necessary, appropriate, accurate, and complete

    • Provide similar information and advice to junior medical staff on a daily basis, and to Consultants as and when needed in both verbal and written form (e.g. Undertake risk management and ensure compliance with legislation and relevant national policies and guidelines, along with local policies and procedures including the Trust Formulary.
    • Work in an effective team with and clinically supervise, pharmacy technicians involved in Trust Medicines Management scheme on designated wards
    • Responsible for deciding stock holdings with the senior nurse for the ward
    Dispensary

    • For allocated sessions or agreed periods each week act as the supervising pharmacist or Responsible Pharmacist in the dispensary.
    • Check the dispensing of the pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants/dispensers.
    • Dispense using the Pharmacy computer for issuing medication. Respond to queries from medical staff and all other hospital staff.
    • Supervise the clinical standards within the dispensary.
    • Help to supervise and train new Pharmacy staff working in the dispensary.
    • Participate in the provision of the Medicines Information service in order to provide uptodate, evaluated information on medicines, and give pharmaceutical advice to patients and healthcare professionals.
    • Answer enquiries from health care professionals on specific patient groups or disease states and make recommendations to help inform their practice.
    • Answer enquiries from patients, empowering them with knowledge about their medications these will primarily originate from the Patients Medicines Helpline located in the Medicines Information department at GRH.
    • Take in enquiries by telephone, use a variety of information sources and clinical knowledge to answer the enquiry and respond by agreed deadline by means of verbal or written communication.
    Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit

    • Work within the manufacturing unit and follow the Standard Operating Procedures and worksheets within the area.
    • Develop knowledge of aseptic preparation of pharmaceuticals to enable broader understanding for the checking and releasing of products.
    • Cytotoxics, adult parenteral nutrition(PN), and neonatal parenteral nutrition
    • Perform a clinical check on adult cytotoxic prescriptions received in the department and intervene as necessary with prescribers (seeking advice from senior members of staff as necessary).
    • Answer queries from patients and hospital staff on chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition and other operational manufacturing issues (referring to senior members of staff when appropriate).
    • Support the mental health dispensary and the clinical mental health pharmacy service to provide care to patients in mental health/learning disabilities inpatient units, and under mental health community services in Gloucestershire
    • Support clinical pharmacy services to inpatient wards and community mental health team bases
    • Encouraging compliance with national protocols, and local guidelines and formularies.
    • Undertaking medicines reconciliation assurance in conjunction with the Medicines
    • Accessing and interpreting patients test results, including the use of clozapine patient monitoring systems.
    • Provide a daily ward visit to an oncology ward providing the same service as described in section above clinical pharmacy
    • Gain some accompanied experience at Sue Ryder hospice
    • Attend the ward MDT weekly as the rota allows
    Senior pharmacist Lead for Medicine
    4 year Vocational Masters degree (or Bachelor degree and equivalent skills gained through experience)
    ~ Current Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council and up to date with revalidation
    ~ Previous experience in pharmacy (including Pre-registration training)
    Previous experience of hospital pharmacy
    Able to demonstrate a commitment to undertake further training and development e.g. undertake a Clinical Pharmacy Diploma
