    Description

    Working as the specialist midwife with enhanced education and training in diabetes, he/she will be best placed to provide additional support and guidance to a women and her family, when her care becomes increasingly complex as a result of diabetes.

    The specialist midwife will evolve the diabetic care pathway and will work in collaboration with the diabetic nurse specialist and obstetric consultants who specialise in diabetes.

    They will provide a continuum for the diabetic population which will enhance the health of the women and their families.

    The specialist midwife will continue to support, advise and monitor women's health and wellbeing during her pregnancy and birth.

    He/she will guide the women and her family on the care of the neonate and monitor its wellbeing.

    The specialist midwife will build up networks within the community to which they will be able to sign post the women, enabling then to take responsibility for their future care.

    He/she will work closely with midwifery and obstetric colleagues to ensure that care provision for the patients in the care pathways is of high quality, clinically effective and resource efficient.
