NUH Pathology is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant (Full time AFC Band 2) to join our dedicated and friendly Cellular Pathology Team.

We aspire to provide the best possible service to patients across the region.


Previous experience in an NHS clinical laboratory or in analytical techniques would be an advantage but is not essential as full training will be provided.

A good level of secondary education is required with English, Maths and Science to GCSE (Grade A-D) or equivalent


The role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant is varied and includes collection of samples from Clinics and Theatres, loading and unloading of glass slides onto laboratory equipment and digital scanners, block and slide archive management, housekeeping, administration tasks and stock receipt/control.

Working hours are Monday to Saturday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

You will be expected to cover the Monday to Saturday service on a rotational basis (5 days per week) You will be required to work in the Histopathology laboratories on both QMC and City Hospital NUH campuses.

Informal visits are strongly encouraged.

Main duties of the job


We expect you to be a passionate, self-motivated individual who has an organised approach to work with good attention to detail and who can remain calm when busy.

You will possess well developed communication and observational skills and enjoy working as part of a team so together we can provide excellent care and quality in a challenging environment.


Main duties of the job are:

  • Collection of samples from Clinics and Theatres
  • Preparation of slides for staining and scanning including loading and unloading of slides onto, and from, stainers and digital scanners or other laboratory equipment.
  • Completing sample filing and archiving.
- performing simple clerical tasks such as scanning.

  • Perform general housekeeping duties including maintaining stock levels, general cleaning, and waste disposal also supporting with receipt of goods to the department.
Working for our organisation


The Cellular Pathology department, which is based on 2 campuses, currently receives and processes approximately 66,000 surgical histology requests and 6,000 diagnostic Cytology requests per year, resulting in the production of over 310,000 slides for examination.


We have a team of approximately 180 staff consisting of Consultant pathologists, Healthcare scientists, Nurses and APT staff, we are also well supported by our Administration and Clerical team.

The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
