    A new opportunity to join our Health and Safety Team as a Health and Safety Adviser has arisen The Campus Health and Safety team act as a conduit across the Wellcome Genome Campus for the continuous improvement of health, safety and wellbeing standards and related disciplines through advising and influencing management and their teams. Joining a multi-disciplined team, the primary objective of this adviser role is to work with the Biological Safety Officer to support safety arrangements in our laboratories.

    About the Role:

    You will work in collaboration with managers and their teams across the Campus, for the continuous improvement of health and safety standards.

    You will provide support to the team leaders, managers and scientists in the preparation of procedures and risk assessments, delivering appropriate training and ensuring processes are continually improved through proactive inspection and engagement programmes. In addition, support will be given to the Estates team with regards to laboratory design and refurbishment.

    With a wide ranging and diverse activities that take place on campus you may be asked to support teams in other areas of health and safety.

    You will be responsible for:
    • Assisting the Head of Campus Health and Safety in the implementation of the health and safety strategy by advising, monitoring, coaching and influencing managers and other campus community members on the continuous improvement of health and safety standards and related disciplines across the Campus.
    • Undertake project work to develop processes and procedures to inform and advise team leaders and managers on achieving safe working practices and compliance across the Campus
    • To take responsibility for a wide range of complex and routine health and safety casework, including the investigation of injury and non-injury events and occupational health concerns.
    • Developing proactive working with customer groups to offer pragmatic, professional advice to management and other Campus Members to identify and resolve challenges effectively and efficiently.
    • Responding to changes in relevant statutory provisions in the field of health and safety, Campus scientific focus and related disciplines through dissemination of information and to advise on necessary action
    • In consultation with the Head of Health and Safety manage communication with enforcing authorities such as the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency or Anglian Water Authority.
    Essential Skills:
    • Educated to a level 5 or equivalent qualification in a biological or chemical discipline
    • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent level 3 health and safety qualification
    • Demonstrable experience in a relevant health and safety role, for example working as a Laboratory Manager / Health & Safety Adviser in a scientific environment
    • Practical experience of writing risk assessments
    • Practical experience of undertaking routine workplace inspections
    • Confidence to deliver effective training / presentations to a varied audience
    • Good interpersonal and written / verbal communication skills
    • Positive, can-do attitude, focused on looking for solutions
    • Proficiency to plan and prioritise work with the minimum of supervision working independently, or as part of a team
    • Competent user of IT in an office environment
