Job summary:


The Digital Infrastructure directorate leads on making sure the right digital infrastructure is in place across the country; setting up policies to promote investment and protect national security, whilst running innovative pilot programmes for the next generation of technology.


This is one of the most high profile policy areas within DSIT, with close political, parliamentary and media interest that sits at the heart of the Government's productivity, security and international policy ambitions.

The work of the team combines policy, delivery and strategic thinking skills.

The Open Networks Programme has just been launched to build a more competitive, dynamic and diverse telecoms equipment supply chain - specifically bringing open network technology to market more quickly, effectively and sustainably.

The Government's 5G Diversification Strategy sets out the approach of tackling the current lack of vendor diversity in the global market.

As part of the Future Network Programmes team, you will be at the heart of the team established to pursue a range of actions via R&D investment, as it attempts to embed changes in the global standards system.

This role sits within the Future Network Programmes team reporting to a Band A Commercial lead. Working alongside colleagues in the Business Operations team you will help to provide commercial oversight and support to the Future Network Programmes team


Job description:

This role sits within the Future Network Programmes team reporting to a Band A Commercial lead.

Working alongside colleagues in the Business Operations team you will help to provide commercial oversight and support to the Future Network Programmes team.

You will support commercial aspects of in-flight projects, procurement, and due diligence for new projects and services. You will work alongside Project Management, and Finance teams to provide assurance over the commercial aspects of projects.

Key Deliverables/Responsibilities and Tasks

  • You will play a key role in providing commercial advice and support to the Future Networks Programme team.
  • You will establish good relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, confidently speaking to clients, and thinking on your feet.
  • You will assess project bids and their spending plans to ensure the effective use of public funding and ensure all expenditure is in scope of our spending rules.
  • You will run essential due diligence checks on organisations before we enter commercial arrangements, helping to manage our exposure to commercial and financial risk.
  • You will provide oversight of our audit documentation to enable the team to quickly respond to all requests for auditable commercial information
  • You will support the commercial team in organising, planning, tracking and reporting on the team's activity.
  • You will play an active role in establishing the team in Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's wider processes.

Person specification:

Essential requirements

  • Numerical and/or analytical skills to support review of commercial assessment of bids and contracts.
  • Experience working with internal and external stakeholders, presenting information to diverse audiences, and building relationships.
  • Ability to understand someone's requirements and translate these into writing.
  • Promote joined up team work within own team and across groups.
  • Experience of managing process change and improvement.
  • Evidence of your commitment to personal development
Desirable skills

  • Proven ability to work in a commercial environment, involving procurement processes
  • Working towards a commercial qualification such as CIPS or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with R&D projects, ideally in telecommunications or in an advanced technology environment.
  • Ability to think on one's feet when faced with novel problems
