    NPL is seeking a Higher Scientist with experience in Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) based in Teddington to plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. This full-time research focussed job comes with a generous salary and benefits package.

    Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Leading the daily operation of a Thermo Fisher 253+ IRMS with Dual-Inlet, Multiport, and GasBench peripherals
    • Performing routine measurements of stable isotope ratios of pure CO 2 and CO 2 in air samples
    • Performing routine and advanced instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
    • Develop new analytical methods and refine existing protocols to address research questions
    • Preparation of a new generation of gravimetric gas reference materials focussing on CO 2 stable isotopes in synthetic air
    • Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
    • Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and being willing to promote what we do
    Required Qualifications:

    BSc /MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geology or similar

    Minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience with experience on mass spectrometry

    Experience in the preparation and analyses of gases in general and/or experience with isotopic analyses of organic matter, water, carbonates, or similar

    Good communication skills and the ability to work individually and with a team

    Preferred Qualifications:

    PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geology or similar

    Experience with Thermo Fisher Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers, such as Ultra, 252/3, or Delta instruments including peripherals

    Experience in the operation of gas handling and high vacuum systems

    Experience in training and supervision of stable isotope laboratory users

    Experience with the preparation of gravimetric gas standards

    Experience with leading, planning, and delivering complex research projects from conception to fruition
