Arriva Road Transport Services (ARTS) provide rail replacement and transport solutions across the UK, partnering with Train Operating Companies to provide pre planned and emergency transport for engineering works, network rail possessions and any other necessary alterations to service.

Alongside rail replacement, ARTS is available for large scale events, festivals, and sporting events.

ARTS are currently undertaking a large school transport duplication service for schools across the UK in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The main purpose of the role will be to provide overall management and strategic direction for ARTS finance function, a support business of Arriva UK Trains.

The Head of Finance will be responsible for the financial management process of rail replacement, involve regular contact with both internal and external clients and is vital for the continuing success of our existing energetic and dynamic team.


This role will be responsible for developing a business strategy for continual improvement in an exciting and growing sector, while promoting personal growth and development of the whole business.

The Head of Finance will work in conjunction with AUKT to aid development and people initiatives alongside the Head of Commercial, Compliance and Safety, Head of Operations and Managing Director.

Reporting to the Finance & Business Development Director, with dotted line reporting into the Managing Director, ARTS. Based in Derby, this role will require a combination of travel between Derby, London and working from home.

Drive forward our financial strategy and deliver to the financial plan/reforecast

Full responsibility for P&L delivery and financial reporting & payroll processing

Ensure prompt monthly billing process, purchase orders and cash collection, end to end

Drive process improvement initiatives and help drive continuous improvement opportunities

Provide support and governance on all operational and finance activities

Ensure proper governance is in place to protect business assets and drive value

Assist all aspects of running the business to ensure delivery of financial plan and operational objectives. Including but not limited to analysis, performance monitoring, supplier and customer negotiations and work winning

Work closely with the Arriva UK Trains Limited Financial Controller with all aspects of financial management including but not limited to improving corporate governance, statutory reporting, risk management, management accounting and budgeting/ forecasting

Ensure that team performance, productivity and morale is at a consistently high level

Liaise with colleagues in other areas of the country / business to ensure best practice

  • Qualified accountant (min 2 years post qualification experience) with experience of driving commercial performance
Strong business and commercial acumen and a proven track record of business improvement

Analyses complex financial information and transform into Excel analysis and PowerPoint presentations quickly

Attention to detail and a drive to make improvements and drive business performance

Strong focus on delivery to tight deadlines including coordinating a wide array of stakeholders

Practical experience working in a pressurised team environment with the ability to prioritise effectively

Good interpersonal skills and influencing skills at all levels of an organisation

Flexibility in managing varying workload and willingness to get the job done
