The Acute Health Psychology Service Grouping within Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Psychological Therapist as part of innovative service transformation aimed at providing a range of therapeutic options and range of service delivery models - this opportunity has arisen due to service growth and redesign following additional investment from the Trust into the Acute Health Psychology Service.


This post represents an exciting opportunity to work within an established specialist Health Psychology Service that is currently expanding into a range of innovative areas and exploring cutting-edge ways of embedding psychology into teams to support patient care.

CPD opportunities are supported and funded to allow for continued professional development.

All Psychologists and Therapists in the service are supported with career development and continuing professional development programmes.

For example, as well as 1:1 supervision, current supervision groups include:
Compassion-focussed therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy; Family therapy, EMDR and CAT.

As well as this clinical focus, other CPD options include but are not limited to:
leadership, research, service redesign, audit and digital programmes.

The focus is on the delivery of high quality, well integrated, and timely psychological provision.

Working as part of the Clinical Health Psychology Grouping, the therapeutic work will have a focus on the specific challenges for people managing physical health needs, diagnosed conditions, acute health events, and contact with healthcare system(s).

Working as a Therapist, the work will also take full consideration of the range of emotional and psychosocial factors that can impact upon psychological wellbeing.


We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England.

We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres.

We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate.

High quality patient care is at the heart of everything we do and we strive to ensure every single patient and service user has an exceptional experience with us.

We have one of the most extensive patient experience programmes of any trust in England.


The post holder will work within Health Psychology Services Grouping, providing psychological group and individual therapy interventions, (including but not prescriptively cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)) to clients with a range of moderate to complex psychological distress associated with their health condition.


To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust.

This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.
