Department:

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the ESRC-funded project; "Generations of

London English:

Dialect and Social Change in Real Time" which is a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the University of York led by Principal Investigator Prof.

Devyani Sharma at QMUL.


Role:

The postholder(s) will work closely with the investigators leading the project, and in particular with Prof.

Sam Hellmuth at the University of York, for whom a key role in the project is to lead on the data management required for publication of the project fieldwork recordings as an open access corpus with the UK Data Service.


The postholder responsibilities will include:
- leading on the transcription, anonymisation and forced alignment of sound files recorded in the Generations of London English project, for publication in the planned new 'Corpus of London English'
- working with the project team to test and implement the use of automatic speech recognition tools for transcription of speech data and/or performing manual orthographic transcription of speech data.
- data processing and file management in accordance with project protocols.
- using tools for forced alignment of transcriptions to the audio signal.
- coordination, oversight and training of a team of undergraduate Research Assistants who will be working on transcription and checking of the outputs of automated processes.
- supporting project administration and stakeholder engagement and related project activities.


Skills, Experience & Qualification needed:


  • PhD in Linguistics or equivalent experience e.g. in the later stages of a PhD
  • Knowledge of sociophonetics, corpus phonology or laboratory phonology, or equivalent fields
  • Experience working with software, in particular requiring use of scripts and/or coding e.g. R
  • Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high quality
  • Commitment to personal development and updating of knowledge and skills
