    Job summary

    We are looking to appoint a team of StR Lower Doctors to an adult General Internal Medical Ward in University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust. This post will be supported by the wider General Internal Medicine team and will provide comprehensive inpatient management on a general inpatient medical ward.

    Main duties of the job

  • Daily ward rounds.
  • Managing individual patient workload and presenting cases to attending ward consultant.
  • Being a core member of ward MDT.
  • Liaising with a range of different specialties across the hospital and community to ensure safe and timely patient care.
  • Liaising with patients next of kin ensuring good communication.
  • Building good relationships with your ward team.
  • Taking part in teaching and audits.
  • Training of new team members as well as medical students and physicians associates.

    General Internal Medicine is looking for enthusiastic individuals to work closely with our team. The acuity of the patients fluctuates, thus providing a thriving environment to learn and develop skills across general internal medicine. The number of new admissions seen per day is 4-5 on average. The ward is supported by a robust MDT team, including established nursing teams, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, dietician and other allied health care professionals.

    Job responsibilities

    The GIM department is fully committed to the education and ongoing learning of our junior medical workforce. Below is a list of what is currently offered within the team:

  • Tuesday afternoon teaching sessions where case base learning and problem-solving strategy is discussed with all members of the junior and senior medical team.
  • Preparatory teaching for MRCP-PACES exam.
  • PDT (personal development time) given. 2 hours per week based around working core rota and is dependent on staffing levels at that time.
  • Opportunities to take part in Clinical governance meetings as well as clinical audits and quality improvement plans.
  • If interested, senior clinicians can give guidance on research writing a paper, publishing and presenting at national/international conferences.
  • Will participate in academic teaching program for Physicians associates and undergraduate medical students from the Peninsular Medical School, University of Plymouth

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Achieved MB BS or equivalent
  • Desirable

  • ALS/ACLS or equivalent Studying towards Part 1 of higher qualification.
  • Experience

  • Experience of basic life support and resuscitation skills
  • Completed foundation junior doctor training
  • Desirable

  • Previous experience within the NHS - 6 months minimum
  • Wide medical experience & familiarity with the NHS
