Job summary:


The Agriculture, Food and Drink Team in the Department for Business and Trade has a vacancy for an Agri-Tech Export Lead.

With this sector being one of our departmental priorities, it is an exciting time to join us. This is an excellent opportunity to raise your profile and develop your career through this fast-paced and high-profile role. You will lead the strategic development of UK export opportunities for the Agri-tech sector.


You will be managing relationships with both public and private sector-based organisations, as well as our overseas Posts to help deliver overseas trade promotion campaigns to help us reach our £trillion export target.

At the same time, you will also help to deliver opportunities for the industry from Free Trade Agreements and new market access.


You will be focussed on supporting the rapidly growing Agri-Tech sector which encompasses a range of technologies aimed at improving sustainable productivity on the farm and tackling the global challenges of food security.

In particular, the emerging practice of precision agriculture, seed and animal genetics, satellite imaging for field mapping, animal health diagnostics and treatments; as well as new vertical farming production methods.

Job description:

The role involves liaising with UK and overseas government colleagues to promote the UK sector overseas:

  • Leading export promotion campaigns across key markets and in priority areas where the UK has a key USP. This will involve developing market strategies and business plans as well as helping to implement bespoke campaign-related activities within budget. This will entail developing and maintaining successful relationships with our overseas posts in Embassies and Consulates.
  • Develop and sustain strong relationships with key industry partners and stakeholders, galvanising them to work in innovative ways for their industry and support greater exports.
  • Supporting and advising Ministers in their role to champion the sector and boost exports.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Trade Policy and Defra to ensure industry are optimising opportunities from Free Trade Agreements and new market access.
  • Line management responsibility for an SEO and joint responsibility with Overseas Post for a second SEO.

Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.


Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • Creative and innovative selfstarter who is happy to look for opportunities and explore innovative ways of working.
  • Able to demonstrate clear strategic thinking and ability to deliver a strategic vision.
  • Management and leadership skills to set direction for your areas of responsibility.
  • Welldeveloped relationship management skills and ability to demonstrate that you have (or can develop) a consultative approach to account and stakeholder management.
  • Able to represent the work of the department to Ministers, senior stakeholders and senior level business people.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, comfortable liaising with a wide range of partners, ministers, businesses, parliament and No 10.
  • A collaborative teamplayer.

Desirable Criteria
Previous experience in international trade, a commercial background, or background in the Agri-tech sector would be an advantage.


The Person

  • Should be able to demonstrate that they can work collaboratively with internal and external partners, including OGDs (Other Government Departments).
  • Should be able to strategically plan the development of key subsectors for agritech to enable companies to capitalise on market opportunities.
