Functional Skills Tutor (Literacy)

Based at Glasshouse College (Stourbridge)

40 hours per week, 37 weeks per year
Actual Salary Range
£20,171 - £24,995 per annum (which is pro rata on FTE of £24,717 to £30,628)

Within Birmingham and the Black Country settings these include core crafts of glass and jewellery.


Our colleges provide an innovative and diverse Practical Skills Therapeutic Education (PSTE) curriculum and our students benefit from an extensive range of nutritional, therapeutic and medical support.

Each core element of the educational cycle is designed to establish active and positive relationships with nature and the community through a holistic approach to human development.


This supports three key stages:
overcoming barriers to learning; becoming skilled and being ready to engage and give back to the community.


The post holder will be working with a
team of experienced functional skills tutors to provide excellent development of literacy skills for leaners.

You will be required to deliver high quality functional skills tuition, which meets the needs of the individual students, both in line with external requirements our unique method of Practical Skills Therapeutic Education.


To undertake this position successfully you will have:

  • A teaching qualification such as, Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS or above
  • Ability to teach functional skills English ideally from Preentry
  • Level 1 to Level including GCSE
  • Knowledge and practice of assessing functional skills and supporting people with Dyslexia and musthave skill in working with learners with special educational needs and disabilities.


Applicants for this role must have significant experience of working in an education or other public sector environment and possess a high degree of personal resilience and emotional and social intelligence.


Main Duties:


  • To assess, plan and deliver functional skills in literacy, and where required, GCSE English to students on an individual or small group basis according to their individual learning needs and requirements.
  • To work as a part of the functional skills team to develop a highquality functional skills programme within the college.
  • To be a part of ongoing assessment of students learning needs and to make reasonable adjustments as required minimising barriers to learning and achievement.
  • To deliver the education remit to students as defined by the Assessment Recording Framework.
  • Some crosssite working at Argent College may be required from time to time
