Are you a qualified professional with company secretarial experience in the private or not-for-profit sector? Are you passionate about the success of the Conservative Party?


If so, a unique opportunity has arisen to support the effective delivery of the Party Board and its official committees.


Working as part of the professional Party at CCHQ and closely with the Party's external Company Secretary, this role will ensure that the appropriate systems of governance are executed and that the Party continues to fulfil its statutory responsibilities including the requirements of Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act (PPERA 2000).


Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Party's Registered Treasurer you will coordinate the Board and Committees' annual workplans and support the induction of new senior volunteers.


Job Scope

  • Add value to the development of the Board workplan and meetings, using your professional expertise to sense check and guide the development of papers for discussion and approval.
  • Ensure that accurate, up to date records are kept of all meetings and decisions in accordance with the Party's agreed governance protocols and other legal requirements.
  • Ensure consistent practice across all the Party's working committees acting as the liaison between the Chairs and members of these committees from across the Parliamentary, Voluntary and Professional parties.
  • Work closely with the Party's external Company Secretary, its auditors and the Finance department to maintain the registers of directors and shareholdings in the Party's quasi subsidiary entities.
  • Drive Board effectiveness through the ongoing review of practice and improvement of systems and processes.
To deliver against these outcomes, you will require exceptional interpersonal and organisational skills.

You will need to build key strategic working relationships across the wider Party including with colleagues in the Voluntary and Parliamentary Parties as well as external partners.


Your responsibilities:


  • Convening and providing administration for Board and Committee meetings: for example, producing agendas, taking minutes, conveying decisions and handling meeting correspondence.
  • Ensure timely and wellplanned followup and resolution to points raised in board and committee meetings
  • Providing legal, financial and/or strategic advice during and outside of meetings.
  • Advising directors and members of the senior leadership team on corporate governance matters.
  • Understand the requirements of all relevant laws including company law, the Party's responsibilities under the Equality Act and Health and Safety regulations and PPERA
  • Keeping up to date with regulatory or statutory changes and policies that might affect the organisation.
  • Ensuring that policies are up to date and are approved. Support the development of new policies and ensure decisions are made in reference to policy and adherence to procedure.
  • Communicating with external professionals involved in corporate governance, such as auditors.
  • Work closely with the COO and the Party's registered company secretary to meet statutory deadlines
  • Maintain a central register of key governance documents and ensure that they are easily accessible future enquiry and for archiving in the Party's political archives
  • Ensure you protect the personal data you work and follow the Data Protection and Information Governance policies and procedures of the Party.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Experience of working at a Board level and acting as a Company Secretary/Secretariat in a commercial or nonforprofit organisation.
  • A qualified Finance, Legal or Company Secretarial professional or equivalent.
  • Proven track record in developing effective governance systems, procedures and policies.
  • Experience of developing productive professional partnerships with key customers and stakeholders.

Skills and abilities

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • An ability to analyse complex financial and legal information and support the communication of this in easily understood formats to nontechnical colleagues.
  • Able to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities and resolve complex issues sensitively.
  • Highly developed commercial awareness
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent IT skills, including all Microsoft office packages
  • Enthusiasm for keeping up to date with legislation.
  • Excellent relationship building and influencing skills with the ability to tailor message and style appropriately.
  • Discretion and diplomacy.
  • A personal commitment to the values of the Conservative Party
