  • Flooding represents a crucial challenge both now and into the future as the impacts of climate change become apparent. Having a strategic overview of all sources of flooding, the Environment Agency has a key role in shaping our response to this challenge moving forwards.

Working as a Flood and Coastal Risk Management Advisor in the Partnerships and Strategic Overview Team, you will be working at the very heart of this organisation, helping to protect people and property from flooding.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Taking responsibility as senior user for the development of our flood risk management projects or supporting other Risk Management Authorities [RMAs] in the development of their projects.
  • Working closely with the Senior Advisor in supporting the ambitions set out in the Environment Agency's Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy for England 2020 and FCERM Strategy Action Plan to collectively manage flood risk across the catchment.
  • Developing and maintaining good internal and external working relationships with key partners and communities for the benefit of improving flood risk management outcomes.
  • Taking part in incident management when flooding occurs.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team- The Partnership and Strategic Overview teams focus on four areas - evidence (data, modelling and mapping), strategic overview and planning (overview of flood risk from all sources and tactical direction), project development and delivery (including with other RMAs) and regulation (e.g., planning consultations and environmental permits).

We aim to create more resilient catchments so flooding causes less harm to people, results in less damage and those affected can return to normal more quickly.


  • Experience/skills required
  • We are looking for someone who is motivated and passionate with the ability to drive forward outcomes and achieve positive results.
Understanding of flood and coastal risk management including engineering and nature-based solutions.

  • Able to act as a senior user with experience of the project environment, developing, assessing and evaluating business cases.
  • Good problemsolving capabilities including developing innovative solutions.
  • Strong communication skills including engagement, influencing, negotiation, customer and relationship management.
  • Able to organise and deliver time critical work by planning, tracking, gathering and maintaining data/information.
  • Be able to technically coach and mentor others.
  • Flexible to the needs of the organisation and new ways of working.
  • Competence in Geographic Information Systems advantageous.
A full UK driving licence is essential.
