    Are you interested in the opportunity to jointhe team of staff within one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe? Weare looking for two enthusiastic vascular surgeons to join as research fellowsin our vascular and major trauma service. This particular post is at SpecialtyRegistrar level ST3+ level and in addition to working toward a post-graduateresearch degree, will support the delivery of services including participationin 1:9 Vascular and Major Trauma Surgery acute rota

    Main duties of the job

    Thepost of Clinical Research Fellow in Trauma and Vascular Surgery is for 1 year,with a view to further extension by mutual agreement, allocated to the LeedsVascular Institute. The post holder willbe engaged in a vascular research project with a view to submitting the workfor a higher degree (MSc/MD/PhD).

    Vascularsurgery is embedded within internationally recognised research infrastructureat the University of Leeds including the Leeds NIHR BRC, NIHR Surgical MedTechMIC, RCS Clinical Trials Unit and BHF training centre.

    Currently,we have projects which encompass clinical vascular research as well aslaboratory-based studies in a range of subjects including the cell biology ofvascular disease, biomarkers of plaque stability, and vascular tissueengineering and regenerative medicine.

    You will join a team of 1 ACL, 3 ACFs, 1 AFP and 1trust research fellow. In addition to the research work, there are alsoclinical duties which include a day-case operating list and outpatient clinics. The post holder will also participate in thevascular and major trauma surgical StR acute out of hours rota.

The applicant should therefore hold ATLS or anequivalent qualification. The successfulcandidates will have the opportunity to participate in a research project thataligns with unit interests in AAA, CLTI, diabetic foot, global health, andtranslational basic science, working within the NIHR BRC and MedTechinfrastructure in Leeds.

    Job responsibilities

    Thesuccessful candidate will be carefully supervised by Mr Russell, Mr T Wallace,Mr P Coughlin or Mr M Bailey and in all aspects of the clinical and laboratoryresearch work, and in addition, have a senior (Professor or Reader in theUniversity of Leeds) non-clinical co-supervisor based throughout his/herproject. There are regular research meetings at which the work in progress iscarefully evaluated and this also serves as a problem-solving forum. The TrustDoctor is actively encouraged to present his/her work at local, national andinternational meetings and it is expected that the research work is submittedto peer-reviewed journals. PreviousVascular Research Fellow post holders have been successful in being awardedeither an MD or PhD Degree by the University of Leeds and it is expected thatthe current incumbent would also submit his/her work for such a higher degree.The unit has an excellent track record of research fellows obtaining national trainingnumbers in surgery, and most recently in the new separate vascular surgicalspeciality.

    Inaddition to the research aspects of the post, the post holder is also affordedthe opportunity to improve his/her clinical experience in the form of electiveday-case surgery, and seeing patients in the clinic and participating in thevascular surgical and major trauma acute out of hours rota.

    Emergency assessment of vascular andresuscitative major trauma patients

    Post-operative intensive care reviews

    Discharge letters

    Experience

  • 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice;
  • Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

  • Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
