    AXA UK London have had an exceptional year in terms of growth and profit in 2023. As they continue to build on this momentum and become the brokers choice in London, they are looking for a Lead Underwriter to help them continue to build a Construction Book.

    This role will provide the opportunity to drive profitable growth, in the construction sector particularly through Mid-Market and corporate clients, by underwriting risks whilst developing key relationships with a panel of brokers.

    This is a unique opportunity to establish the construction proposition for AXA UK London, writing both single contracts and annual policies.

    Working with the UK Technical Director and London Branch, you will agree on an underwriting strategy, appetite and pricing. You will be supported in respect to engaging with Brokers and writing the business.

This role would suit an experienced construction underwriter looking for the opportunity to grow their own book and in the fullness of time offers growth into managing a construction team in London and perhaps throughout the UK

You'll work at least 40% of your week away from home, either at one of our office locations, visiting clients or attending industry events. The role can also be based from our Birmingham or Manchester branches.

    What you'll be doing:

  • Writing single contracts up to and in excess of £100M contract value and annual contractor policies that operate in the Mid Market space for UK domicile companies such as house builders etc.
  • You will help develop the construction proposition. The team will support you in respect to product development; underwriting appetite; rating; and in the fullness of time there is the potential to influence the book nationally.
  • Reporting into the London Underwriting Manager, he will aid you in developing internal relationships with the Broker Development Managers and other P&C Lead underwriters who will help you market the product and pass on underwriting leads.
  • Proactively lead the development of strong trading relationships with panel of brokers, taking full ownership for the generation of profitable business from the Broker panel.
  • Develop a robust pipeline of appropriate new business opportunities and ensure that long-term pipeline is realised by ensuring broker / client engagement.
  • Lead meetings, presentations, and tender responses with brokers / end customers to portray AXA capabilities and secure new business opportunities.
  • Effectively promote and deploy AXA's strategy, product range, propositions and key differentiators to leverage commercial opportunities.
  • Your Profile

    What we're looking for:

  • Excellent negotiation and sales skills
  • London Market underwriting experience is essential
  • Experience of large case and portfolio management in the Construction sector, including client exposure
  • High level of technical product knowledge
  • Time management and prioritisation skills
  • Established networking and relationship building skills
  • Sound knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements for insurance
  • High level of communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build positive relationships at all levels both internally and externally
  • Ability to identify and convert business opportunities
  • This position has been defined as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD regime which means that in addition to pre-employment screening checks, the successful candidate will be subject to background screening every 4 years with an annual declaration in interim years.
