    The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

    The Role & Key Responsibilities

    The Museum Manager will be responsible for implementing strategic direction set by the Trustees, creating a sustainable business plan and various policies, strategies and procedures for the Old Police Cells Museum. They will also identify new income streams, lead and effectively managing those who work in the museum as well as ensuring the musuem environment is as safe a possible for all accessing the space.

    The Museum Manager will inspire and lead a small team of volunteers and paid staff, who collectively assist with; the curation and preservation of the museum and it's heritage artifacts, facilitate the educational programme, manage all visitor matters and stakeholder engagement for the museum to ensure the Old Police Cells Musuem is informative and enjoyable for customers.

    The Museum Manager will hold the following responsibilities:

    Assess and propose direction for the Museum and it's displays to the Trustees and Sussex Police by developing a 5-year business plan to implement. Ensure all Museum policies and procedures are current and satisfy all statutory requirements through periodic review. Co-ordinate maintence activities for both the collection and museum space as well as develop new and innovative ways to tackle the challenges faced by the museum.

    Work to preserve the museum's assets, collection and location, and make decisions on ownership, archiving, disposal, loans and purchases of historical items – liaising with management, Trustees and legal services wherever necessary. Work with other local museums and NPCC Heritage portfolio to share best practice and potential exchange of exhibits.

    Manage and maintain the accreditation already afforded to the museum by carrying out the responsibilities in accordance with the accreditation standard. Identify other funding streams available by completing applications and bids for various lottery, heritage and museum grants for greater financial support.

    Assist the Honorary Treasurer in managing income and expenditure as well as preparing the Museum financial papers to ensure that the Museum operates within it's annually appointed budget and with the appropriate audit trail.

    Develop a relevant retail range for vistors to purchase to assist with income generation and advertising.

    Be directly responsible for all those working for the museum ensuring that their work fits with the museum strategy. This includes recruiting, training and co-ordinating new volunteers as well as managing staff/volunteer rotas and their continuous professional development. Ensure that everyone at the museum adheres to current Sussex Police values, quality standards and escalate any management issues.

    Work with stakeholders and funders to ensure that the museum is representative and accessible as possible to all communities and visitors.

    Oversee the generation of visitors and school visits to the museum to achive greater policing education amongst the community. Work with Police Youth Officers to agree current and relevant topics and content for specific educational inputs and activities.

    Regularly evaluate and monitor activities carried out at the museum and review visitor feedback to understand customer satisfaction levels against key performance indicators in the business plan. Also ensure value for money, factoring in continuous evolvement and improving the museum's offering.

    Oversee and contribute to; the museum's social media platforms, articles about the museum and its artifacts for the museum's and Sussex Police's internal and external websites as well as local community media. This is to communicate with a broad range of audiences and raise awareness, actively promoting the museum.

    Skills & Experience

    Ideally we are looking for someone with a degree in Museum Studies or a similar qualification in the field. Or someone who can demonstrate professional experience in a museum or heritage work.

    We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience of working in a museum or heritage environment with working knowledge of governance and business practice.
  • Knowledge of collection care, conservation and experience working in an preservation focused environment.
  • Knowledge of the Museum Accreditation Scheme.
  • Experience of leading a team
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with stakeholders, colleagues, volunteers, visitors and partners in the heritage sector.
  • Self motivated, organised and able to perform with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written, verbal, numerical, presentation and IT skills.
  • Good project and budget management skills.
  • Innovative, creative with good problem solving skills.
  • Ability to devise and implement training / educational inputs.
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment.
  • Health and safety management experience.
  • Experience of events planning.
  • Please note that you will often work within the Museum, which is located in the basement of Brighton Town Hall. However we can on occasion arrange a hotdesking arrangement within the Town Hall and will have guaranteed hot desking within Brighton Police Station. We can also accommodate some agreed working from home.
