Description

This is an exciting role in the Market Access Strategy Team, where we have an important and fascinating remit to increase UK trade by taking a strategic approach to tackling market access barriers to the benefit of consumers and businesses.

Our work is front and centre of the UK's independent trade policy and is a key DIT strategic objective.

Market Access barriers are individual tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and overseas direct investment (ODI) restrictions which impede the ability of UK businesses to trade and invest effectively.

They are a significant impediment to global trade and investment.

This work has the potential to add billions of pounds to the economy (tackling the department's "hit list" of barriers could add over £20 billion over the next 5 years) and is integral to HMG objectives to increase UK economic growth and of significant senior and ministerial interest.

Specifically, this Market Access Sector Lead role is to support the UK economy through the targeted resolution of key barriers.

The successful applicant will be required to work closely with the overseas network, DIT policy and trade promotion teams, other government departments and with business sectors, to test the prioritisation of barriers (by value, resolvability, and strategic impact), to identify further barriers, to identify opportunities for industry to support resolution and to ensure that industry can take advantage of export opportunities from recently resolved barriers.

You will ensure the Department's approach to tackling market access barriers is understood and supported, enabling insights to inform a global view of market access barriers, and bolstering the success of market openings translating to business wins.

Job description

The post holder will be required to:

  • Devise and implement stakeholder engagement with key sectors (initially the Healthcare and Life Sciences Sectors, with scope to expand this remit over time), building strong links to industry representatives to inform market access priorities, identify collaboration models for resolving barriers and appropriate channels for promoting opportunities from barrier resolution.
  • Work with Other Government Departments to access their industry fora, supporting a crossgovernment view of most important barriers and fostering good relationships needed for collaboration. Lead coordination and delivery of the Inter-Departmental Market Access Forum.
  • Regularly present market access work to internal and external audiences. This will require strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Developing expert knowledge of market access to support engagement with business and other stakeholders including views on the most significant barriers.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with business facing teams in DIT, other Departments and Posts related to this work.
  • Support central briefings related to market access (PQs, briefing for Ministers, etc), maintaining effective core lines on market access, being a key contact point for briefing teams.
  • Some occasional UK and overseas travel may be required.

Hybrid Working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

For this role, the Department will not consider sponsoring a visa or issuing a Certificate of Sponsorship. Please note we are unable to offer advice on any Visa and Immigration cases.
