Purpose of the Role
Fleet Engineer within the Rail Profile Treatment Team at Colas Rail.

Lead the maintenance and development of your fleet within the team, you will be responsible for all elements of engineering compliance and fleet development.

You will work within a team of 3 Fleet Engineers and will report directly to the maintenance manager.

You will improve reliability, provide pivotal changes to Maintenance Instructions and drive innovation on the platforms you are responsible for.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability

  • Responsible for engineering compliance within your fleet, this includes planned maintenance and following appropriate standards to ensure vehicle availability is not affected.
  • Drive innovation and encourage ideas within the work culture. Taking an idea and acting on it in line with Network Rails Engineering Change Procedures.
  • Develop a lifecycle strategy of the rail vehicles within your responsibility.
  • Building outage plans with the Maintenance Manager and managing outages through to completion. You will also be responsible for component lifecycle tracking and management of your strategic assets.
  • Lead the review, optimisation and amendment of new and revised vehicle maintenance instructions. This includes all taskbased risk assessments and their review dates.
  • Support reliability and best practice initiatives through the business unit.
  • Support internal and external audit regimes, processes and demonstrate prompt engagement to close out items raised.
  • Provide engineering input into contract/tender submissions.
  • Ensure all fault reporting is carried out diligently through use of the Fleet Asset Management System (FAMS).

Person Specification

Technical Skills

  • Experience as a rail vehicle fleet engineer within the rail industry.
  • HNC/D or higher in an engineering discipline and ideally with Incorporated status or higher.
  • Member of a professional engineering body.
  • Experience of maintenance engineering, reliability engineering, vehicle overhaul and refurbishment.
  • Commercially aware and adaptive to needs of the business.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, external organisations and management.
  • Experience of cost control management.
  • Implement a comprehensive system of change control procedures to ensure that vehicle technical changes are properly administered.
  • Actively champions and promotes change and innovation to improve own and teams performance.
  • Develops relationships within their area of expertise and confidently influences other parts of the business to achieve results.
  • Demands continuous improvement by setting challenging objectives.
  • Provide oncall engineering support as required by the business.
  • Deputise for the Professional Head of Engineering when required.
