    Job overview

    The Acute Assessment Unit& Emergency Ambulatory Care Unit in Royal Sussex County Hospital is looking to appoint a full time Senior Practice Development Nurse on a secondment role. Applicants must be hard working, flexible, enthusiastic and possess a broad spectrum of clinical skills. The overall objective of the post holder must be to develop skilled, effective and caring health care professionals.

    Main duties of the job

    Prospective applicants should have a minimum of 3 years experience working in an acute clinical setting at the senior level and have a mentorship or teaching qualification.

    The successful applicant must also be able to identify training needs, construct training sessions, undertake competency based clinical skills and evaluate effectiveness of training for a varied group of health care professionals. Staff groups who will sit under the remit of the Senior Practice Development Nurse include: nursing staff, student nurses, health care assistants and allied health professionals.

    The post holder must have excellent communication skills both in group situations as well as one-to-one. The use of information technology systems is fundamental to the role therefore, proficiency in the use of MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher is required.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    To provide professional leadership to the AAU/EACU team working in conjunction with the matron and the senior nursing team to promote delivery of professional nursing care to acutely ill patients. Ensuring the highest possible standards of care are received by patients and their carers whilst on the Acute Floor. To lead in the planning, implementation, co-ordination and evaluation of educational activities within the Acute Floor to promote nursing excellence. Facilitate the continuous professional development and education of all members of staff in a positive learning environment.

  • Act as an expert clinical practitioner and provide high quality nursing care at senior level
  • Ensure the highest quality of nursing care is delivered to all patients with the promotion of evidence based practice
  • To integrate policies, education, practice development and research relevant to the clinical area.
  • Act as a resource and advisor for future service developments and trust-wide training and education.
  • To provide a rolling educational programme equipping health care professionals with knowledge and skills required to detect and treat acutely ill patients.

    Essential Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • Leadership qualification
  • RGN Level 1
  • Mentorship course/ ENB 998 or equivalent
  • PGCert Ed /PGCHSCE
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Evidence of involvement in practice development
  • NMC registration with current PIN
  • Desirable criteria

  • Degree in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience
  • Masters level or equivalent level of experience
  • Substantial experience at Band 6 within acute care setting
  • Understanding of national nursing agenda
  • ALS provider Teaching qualification
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
