What you need to know about the role


We're looking for Heavy Plant Fitter on days to support within the workshop and plant process areas on the Scunthorpe site, reporting to the Shift Garage Controller.

You will work to achieve plant workshop targets, product quality, customer service and health and safety objectives.


As part of a multi-disciplined team you will ensure the most effective engineering service is provided to our manufacturing customers.


Using your skills to achieve business objectives, you will react to engineering, quality and safety issues as they arise and utilise your knowledge, experience and skill to initiate corrective actions.


The typical asset machinery is Heavy Plant, CAT Dumpers, CAT Loading Shovels, SVE 52 Forklifts, CAT Excavators, Mobile Screens, Case Poclains, Bobcats, and Skidsteers.


Responsibilities include:

  • Inspecting machines for defects, using specialist computer equipment;
  • Undertaking routine inspections of engines, gearboxes, hydraulics, electrical systems, tyres and frames;
  • Fault finding, reporting and prognosis of plant equipment, including:
  • Mechanical
  • Hydraulic
  • Electrical Structural
  • Lubrication systems
  • Dismantling and repairing or replacing faulty components;
  • Actively undertaking all aspects of mobile plant maintenance, repairs and enhancements to the business asset;
  • Reassembling and testing components to ensure they're working safely;
  • Checking new equipment before it's used on site;
  • Using reports to diagnose and find faults;
  • Keeping records of work done to machinery / updating asset equipment status;
  • Providing regular feedback to colleagues and managers, explaining failings;
  • Using a wide range of specialist hand and power tools, including sockets, spanners, screwdrivers, drills, lifting gear, and welding and cutting equipment;
  • Implementing continuous safety inspections;
  • Responding to plant breakdowns out of hours;
  • Outsourcing work to 3rd party areas to complete specialist repairs.
  • Operate / drive machinery under commissioning and recovery duties.

What we need to know about you


You must be qualified to a minimum NVQ Level 3, or to have Level 2 Certificate in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance/Level 2 Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance/ Level 3 Diploma in Plant Maintenance or have served a recognised apprenticeship*.

It's desirable to have a Mobile plant operator's licence as well.

Ideally, you will have experience of mechanical maintenance within a commercial or heavy engineering environment.


You must be flexible, have a desire to learn and develop along with good communication skills and the ability to converse with all employee levels.

You need to have the ability to plan and resource workload around plant process operations, ability to think for yourself, act upon own initiative, react to situations efficiently, and demonstrate a safe work ethic at all times.

Knowledge of the steelmaking process would be beneficial but is not essential, as extensive training will be provided.
