    Job summary

    Rheumatology is a close multi-disciplinary team comprising of pharmacists, specialist nurses,doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists who are supported by a respected and valued team of administrative support staff.

    The ethos of the team is patient centred and one where anyone can achieve their professional development goals; amongst our non-medical practitioners we have prescribers, advanced clinical practitioners and staff who are working towards specialist practice. This is an environment supportive of innovation and progressive practice.

    We are looking to welcome a passionate and ambitious pharmacy technician to the team. This newly created post will sit within a well-respected pharmacy service to rheumatology patients from Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties.

    This post will provide you with the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills within a patient-centred environment, participate in education and training as well as service development. You will develop close working relationships with the pharmacy, medical and nursing teams to contribute to the safe, high-quality, and cost-effective provision of medicines to patients.

    Main duties of the job

    You will play a key role in the provision of medicines management to theoutpatient rheumatology clinics.You will provide crucial support to the improvement and expansion of this service.

    Pharmacy technicians without both ACT and MMT will be appointed at band 4 and receive uplift to band 5 on completion of both the stand alone ACT and MMT accreditations. Newly qualified Technicians who have completed the Integrated Level 3 apprenticeship incorporating both ACT and MMT, will be appointed at 75% top of band 5 and receive uplift to band 5 subject to successful sign off at 6 month review.

    The working hours are hours per week and you will be required to participate in weekend working as well as late duties and bank holiday rotas. Flexible working options would also be considered.

    Job responsibilities

    The successful candidate, will be based within the rheumatology team and will also provide support to the dispensary team.

  • Prescription management of high cost drug supplied via homecare
  • Co-ordinating blood monitoring of patients on disease modifying therapies
  • Working as part of the rheumatology multidisciplinary team to ensure safe prescribing and monitoring of patients
  • Liaising with patients andcare providers outside the hospital GPs and community pharmacies
  • Working as part of the pharmacy team to provide near patient medicines management services to wards, including ward-based dispensing and patient counselling
  • Clinical areas controlled drug checks and returns. Conducting audits, reports and medicine usage reviews

  • Qualified Pharmacy Technician with an NVQ3 or other equivalent qualification
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Accredited as a checking technician
  • Accredited in Medicines Management and/or Medicines Reconciliation
  • Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    Essential

  • Experience of providing a ward-based pharmacy service
  • Able to demonstrate using own initiative appropriately
  • Have experience of implementing and promoting cost-effective strategies for medicines management
  • Desirable

  • Accredited to validate homecare prescriptions
  • Accredited to perform patient blood monitoring
  • Experience of teaching/training others
