    Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) are looking to recruit a forward-thinking and motivated individual to join our team of Acute Medicine Consultants delivering our Acute Medicine services. This will present an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician with a comprehensive understanding of acute medicine to join our dynamic team committed to the delivery of the highest standard of care.

    The Acute Medicine service is an integral part of the Trust's Medicine Division, providing care for a range of acutely unwell patients across our Acute Assessment Units and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

    The successful applicant will join colleagues to continue the exciting developments improving the delivery of emergency care to these acutely unwell medical patients within the settings of Medical Assessment Unit or Bryn Ward.

    Specialist interest will be accommodated eg. Respiratory, Cardiology, or Diabetes clinics, teaching and education sessions at Edge Hill University can also be considered.

    This vacancy is open to all internal and external candidates. NHS Employees should ideally secure their manager's agreement for a secondment arrangement ideally prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made.

    The successful applicant will support the delivery of high-quality acute care across the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

    Responsibilities include:

  • Providing high quality consultant-delivered care to patients
  • Ensuring patient safety, dignity and care are given the highest priority
  • Being proactive in ensuring that patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making
  • Undertaking clinical leadership and supervision, teaching and training of junior medical staff
  • Liaising with clinicians and managers to address any issues arising that may affect the services
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of the acute medicine services at WWL
  • There may be opportunities to pursue an area of specialist interest, eg developing new services or pathways

    On-Call

    Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

    The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

    A summary of the main job duties and responsibilities is provided below:

  • The successful applicant will join colleagues to continue the development of improved delivery of emergency care to the acutely ill medical patient within the settings of the Emergency Floor at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.
  • This post may involve the review of medical patients in short stay unit (Bryn North), assessment wards (MAU and Lowton) acute medical take (A&E in reach) and Same Day Emergency Care Unit.
  • Each day there is a formal morning ward round of all medical patients by acute physicians. Then throughout the day patients are reviewed as they arrive with the junior doctors.
  • The acute physicians also provide senior cover for the Same Day Emergency Care area that accepts ambulatory GP referrals direct to an organised clinic environment.
  • The acute physicians are part of a large team providing unscheduled care and are supported by the general physicians in overnight on call and weekends on call rota.
  • Acute Physicians provide linear consultant presence on assessment areas from 0800 to 20:30.
  • In addition, there are gastroenterology and cardiology in-reach teams providing daily review of complex patients.
  • Post holder will also do one evening shift (1600 to 20:30) per week as a part of weekday acute medicine rota.
  • The job is whole time acute medicine consultant role (10 PAs plus 2 additional PAs if agreed), however candidates with a specialist interest will also be considered for opportunity to develop new service or pathway to benefit acute medicine services clinic or procedure.
  • There is daily support from specialist nurses in several specialties including Oncology, Alcohol, Cardiology, Diabetes and Palliative care.
  • Social support is provided by the Access to community service team (ACST). Hospital at home provides opportunities for continuing some treatment including IV treatment after discharge.
  • Currently there are three acute medicine clinics each week. This provides an alternative to admission or visit to SDEC and allows follow up of investigations and treatment of patients discharged early.

  • Recent comprehensive experience in Acute Medicine and Respiratory Medicine.
  • Experience of Audit and its role in Clinical Governance
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to training and teaching of junior medical staff and other health professionals
  • Experience in clinical supervision
  • Desirable

  • Formal leadership training
  • CCT or HST in Respiratory Medicine
  • Additional Experience of working in dedicated Medical Admissions unit or equivalent
  • Previous experience of leading a team
  • Attendance at ''Teaching the teachers' or similar training course in medical education
  • CCT in General Medicine/ Acute Medicine
  • Qualifications

  • MB ChB or equivalent.
  • GMC with licence to practice
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Desirable

  • Higher Degree PhD, MD or equivalent
  • Formal leadership qualification
  • Entry on the Specialist Register for GIM or within 6 months of CCT
