This post has a dual role: to participate in and help manage the laboratory reference services within the Zoonotic and Acute Respiratory Section (ZARS) and also to carry out the role of Laboratory Safety Officer across the Respiratory and Vaccine PreventableBacteria Reference Unit (RVPBRU) as a whole.

Laboratory Safety Officers (LSOs) have specific duties relating to the routine day to day management of safety matters in the Laboratory.

These duties are carried out on behalf of the Laboratory Director, and incollaboration with the Department Safety Manager, and do not detract from the health and safety responsibilities of those individuals.


Location
This is a lab-based role located at UKHSA Colindale, London, NW9 5EQ.

Working Pattern -Full Time


Essential Criteria:


  • BSc in Microbiology or relevant biological science or equivalent level of qualification and experience.
  • HCPC Registration, CPD registration and certification.
  • Significant and relevant experience in clinical or reference microbiology, including Microbiology of ZARS infections and Epidemiology.
  • Ability to analyse data based on evidence and present it in a meaningful way.
  • Communication and IT skills be able to convey instructions, ideas and opinions clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Wellorganised and good attention to detail.
  • Patience, ability to perform repetitive work and record results accurately.
  • Ability to prioritise work and deal with problems in a calm, efficient and timely manner and to work to deadlines.
  • Ability to write concise and easily understandable scientific reports.
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships.

Desirable Criteria:


  • NEBOSH national general certificate and risk assessor training or equivalent training.
  • Experience in routine daytoday management of safety matters in the Laboratory.
  • Good understanding of the public sector and demonstrated experience in a Healthcare environment.
