The South Devon Bowel Cancer Screening Centre manages the screening programme for the eligible screening population in a rolling two year programme, covering the geographical area of Torbay, the South Hams, Teignbridge, Plymouth and West Devon.

The Screening Centre has cross trust working arrangements with Plymouth NHS Trust, this being a screening site for the centre


As a Specialist Screening Practitioner within the Screening Centre, you will be working as part of the multidisciplinary team ensuring the delivery of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Specialist Screening Practitioners are the first point of contact for participants who have received a positive FIT test. They provide specialist advice, support and continuity of care throughout the screening pathway.


Making an assessment of fitness for colonoscopy, attending colonoscopy, managing the results handling process and referral to the multidisciplinary team if appropriate.

To provide information, psychosocial support and advice to patients undergoing screening for bowel cancer and their families/carers.


Co-ordinating and providing care from the screening centre to address the needs of individuals arising as a consequence of the screening programme.


Acting as the patient's advocate supporting them to navigate and make informed choices at all stages of the screening process.

To be a resource and provide specialist support and advice to other healthcare professionals regarding the screening process.

To work collaboratively with the screening hub, health promotion services, multidisciplinary colorectal teams

The South Devon Bowel Cancer Screening Centre is hosted by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.

It has screening sites at both Torbay and Derriford Hospitals, the Specialist Screening Practitioners are required to work across both sites.

This will involve working at both Torbay and Derriford Hospital each week.

The Centre has responsibility for delivering the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme to Torbay, Plymouth, West Devon, Teignbridge and the South Hams

Patients/Relatives

  • To communicate effectively with patients, family and friends.
  • To maintain accurate, up to date patients records.
  • To be patients advocate at case conference discussions in MDT meetings.
  • To offer support and information when being given bad news.
  • Attend support group meetings.
Colleagues

  • Interprofessional communication with other SSP's in National bowel cancer screening programme.
  • Attend and actively participate at departmental and other appropriate meetings within and external to the Trust to influence and improve service delivery.
  • Communicate with specalist, endoscopy and outpatients nurses within hospital and community.
  • Communicate effectively with MDT and all other agencies in contact with patients, face to face, by letter and telephone.
Clinical

  • Manage the day to day provision of helpline services at the screening centre and provide specialist advice and information for those contacting the helpline.
  • Be responsible for care delivery to patients identified by the screening programme and meet the needs of patients arising as a result of: having been called to participate in screening, having been identified as positive on screening, requiring further treatment, intervention, surveillance follow up, or discharge.
  • Assess patients as fit prior to undergoing screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic investigations.
  • Ensure timely access to screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic intervention and seamless transition to agreed pathways in primary, secondary, tertiary or outpatient settings during all stages of the screening pathway.
  • Establish effective links with the local multidisciplinary teams in order to ensure that where cancer is detected, there is timely presentation and transfer of patients to the MDT.
  • Demonstrate autonomy, in accordance with NMC guidelines, in determining the specialist nursing needs of the patients group.
  • To work in collaboration with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients have access to relevant information in order to enable the patient to make informed choices regarding treatment options throughout their care.
  • To act as the patients advocate on a frequent basis.
  • Communicate highly sensitive and emotive information to patients and carers during breaking bad news consultations. Participate in complex ethical decision making processes, supporting patients in breaking bad news consultations
  • In collaboration with the Lead Nurse, contribute to educational initiatives
  • Provide formal and informal education to staff involved in the care of patients undergoing bowel cancer screening.
  • To provide specialist advice and support to other healthcare professionals regarding the care of patients undergoing bowel cancer screening.
