An exciting development opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Operations team for the post of Patient Flow Sister/Charge Nurse (1 x permanent and 1 x fixed term).

The successful applicants will be a professional clinical role model who inspires confidence, demonstrates excellent communication, interpersonal and prioritization skills, with excellent decision making and problem-solving abilities and who has the confidence and ability to escalate issues outside of the role of responsibilities.


The successful applicant should have relevant post registration experience in an acute setting and an understanding of patient flow issues pertinent to a busy acute hospital trust.

Ensure that each Directorate's operational plans are adhered to, responding to surges in demand as required.


Analyse the beds situation and, using skills, knowledge and experience, ensure that beds are allocated appropriately and effectively for emergency and elective admissions to maximize patient care and the patient experience.


Ensure appropriate and effective allocation of beds to ensure that all patients are admitted to the correct bed first time.

This process should be patient centered and have due regard to risk management and local policies.

To effectively communicate capacity and demand issues to the key staff as and when required.

Liaise with the Community and Hospital based discharge teams to plan discharges from the point of admission.


Ensure effective management of discharges to maximize and match capacity to demand making maximum use of the discharge lounge and community capacity.


Ensure that all wards make full use of the "Estimated Date of Discharge / Expected Date of Discharge" to contribute to effective patient flow.

Take personal responsibility for contributing to the patient flow teams working effectively, collaboratively and in a co-ordinated way.

Attend Care Group, Directorate and team meetings to ensure effective communication.
