Job summary:

The Yorkshire Forest team comprises 79 members of staff responsible for managing the Forestry Commission estate within the region.

The Yorkshire District covers 21,500ha, most of which is in protected landscapes with 19,000ha in the North York Moors National Park and 590ha in the Howardian Hills AON Band a further 280ha of Community Woodlands.


Alongside our traditional timber production, the Yorkshire Forest District offers recreational opportunities for people to enjoy within the many and diverse woodlands that we manage.

We protect and enhance the valuable habitats for the benefit of wildlife and we deliver economic growth by supporting local businesses and rural employment.


We're looking for a Graduate Land Agent, who has the desire to complete their APC in a team that delivers the professional support and advice associated with a diverse rural estate.


Job description:

The graduate land agent will work within the Estates Team, to deliver professional property advice across the District.

As one of three land agents within the highly skilled wider district team, you will be advising forest operations and recreation teams on a wide range of legal and estate management matters.

A strong collaborative approach to land management issues will be an important part of this role.


You will help to identify and develop new opportunities across the estate, making a real contribution to our economic, social and environmental objectives.


We will support you as you obtain the necessary competency experience to achieve your APC within the relevant time period.


Key Work Areas

You will:

  • Assist with landlord and tenant relationships to complete efficient and timely rent reviews, lease renewals and new lettings in relation to agreements for sporting lets, recreational sites, residential properties, farms and agricultural land, telecoms sites and commercial properties
  • Investigate and protect the Forestry Commission's interests in relation to access, encroachments, boundary disputes and claims
  • Assist with wayleaves and the management of utilities
  • Interpret leases from both a landlord and tenant's perspective and offer sound professional advice to colleagues in the forestry and recreational team
  • Liaise with external stakeholders
  • Work to support the recreation team with existing tenant performance, new tenders and leases for recreational activities and development opportunities
  • Work with the wider District team to develop ambitious projects across the District
  • Assist with collating information for RICS Red Book valuations
  • Work with the Estates and wider district team to improve the financial and environmental sustainability of the Estate
  • Work with the building surveyor for property maintenance and development opportunities
  • Work alongside the wider estates team on acquisition proposals

Person specification:


The successful applicant will need to be solution orientated, capable of working independently as well as with a wide range of stakeholders and partners such as landlords, tenants, members of the public, external consultants and statutory bodies.

Experience, Professional and Technical Expertise

Essential
Working towards completion of, or have already completed, a relevant RICS accredited undergraduate or postgraduate course, or have appropriate work experience to work towards chartered status with RICS

Ability to analyse complex and unusual estate management issues and develop detailed solutions to ensure best value

Demonstrate an understanding of the natural environment and its impacts upon estate management decisions and objectives

Demonstrate an understanding of contract terms from a landlord and tenants perspective

A good standard of written and verbal communication

Competent user of MS Office - in particular, Excel, Word, Teams and Outlook


Desirable
Probationer of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers

Experience in working with GIS systems

An understanding of business planning and cost management
