    EPUT is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy, based at Herrick House, Colchester. You will be responsible for the Provision of comprehensive service in Medical Psychotherapy for the North East Sector of EPUT, covering Colchester and Chelmsford. They will have responsibility for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder, namely those with complex co-morbidity requiring an integrative psychiatric, psychological and psychotherapeutic approach, in liaison with other key services.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will also provide clinical leadership and governance to ensure the proper functioning of the Psychotherapy Department and Complex Case Consultation Service. The department is made up of a multidisciplinary psychotherapy team of adult psychotherapists, with individual, group and systemic skills, a highly skilled psychosocial nurse practitioner, and higher dual trainees in General Adult Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy and Core psychiatric trainees.

    Additionally the post holder will be responsible for triaging referrals into the service and will also work alongside MDT colleagues in joint referral meetings with representatives from other teams, including General Adult Psychiatry, Adult Community Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Therapy for You (IAPT) and other specialities (e.g. eating disorders, drug and alcohol services) to determine the clinical pathway for patients referred to secondary care mental health services.

    The post holder must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate CCT or equivalent or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC.

    Job responsibilities
  • To provide Clinical leadership of the Psychotherapy team and complex case consultation service.
  • To take a lead in triaging referrals to the service.
  • To provide expert advice and consultation for other teams referring to service or seeking a second opinion and provide clinical guidance on care planning.
  • To take clinical lead for the management of complex cases under the care of the team, and psychotherapeutic formulation, care planning, and treatment.
  • To lead on liaison and collaborative multi-disciplinary and partnership working with other services/agencies within and outside the trust for patients under the care of the service or as part of the referral process.
  • To undertake psychotherapy assessments for patients and families referred to the service.
  • To carry a psychotherapy clinical caseload of complex patients and families.

    Qualifications
    Essential
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register as a Medical Psychotherapist (CCT in Psychotherapy or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview)
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status. OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment.

  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
  • CCT in general adult psychiatry
  • CCT in general adult psychiatry
  • Registration with British Psychoanalytic Council as Psychoanalyst or Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.
  • Clinical skills, knowledge & experience
    Essential
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Experience working with patients presenting to secondary care mental health services with a range of disturbance including mental illness and personality disorder.
  • Appreciation and understanding of social factors and ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practice.
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
  • Experience in supervising trainee doctors and SAS doctors
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Desirable
  • Wide range of specialist psychotherapy and psychiatric experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Experience of clinical work in Acute Adult Psychiatry at SpR, SASG or consultant level within the last 3 year
  • Utilises a quality improvement approach to think systemically about complex problems, develop potential change ideas and test these in practice using a systematic QI methodology.
