About the Role
As a Mechanical & Electrical Fitter - Substations, you will be required to live within a 45-minute commute of Barking as you will join our London East team covering 5 substations spanning Barking, Canning Town, Bow, West Thurrock and Upminster. The Mechanical & Electrical Fitter - Substations will have the opportunity to take on the responsibility of a wide range of craft duties on Substation plant and equipment including installation of new equipment, refurbishment and maintenance of existing equipment, fault investigation & repair as well as routine condition monitoring in line with commercial targets. You'll typically be working within a team of 2 to 10 people and be involved with maintenance, refurbishment or the replacement of assets on the UK Electricity Transmission System Network. In addition to working on complex High Voltage equipment, you will also work on all kinds of ancillary equipment such as DC battery systems, air compressors and diesels etc. A training programme will be provided for which you will be required to travel to Eakring, Nottingham infrequently and once trained, you may be required to support the wider region for a 2-week period each year. Throughout the year there are some weekend work requirements for which overtime will be paid.
Key Responsibilities:
• Install, refurbish, maintain, fault find and condition monitor substation plant and equipment
• Carry out all work on time and in full as per the work programme
• Give early escalation to the Project Leader/Line Manager of variances to the plan
• Ensure work is carried out in line with assigned standard job times and unit costs
• Drive safe collaborative working practices
• Drive accurate cost capture through outage hubs during the work
• Carry out roles as defined in National Grid's Safety Rules of 'Competent Person'
• Carry out the roles of 'Person in Charge' holding appropriate safety documents
• Carry out nominated statutory and mandatory duties as required by the role
• Eliminate accidents through risk assessment, method statements, awareness and near miss reporting
• Provide mentoring and/or training to less experienced staff
• Utilise all relevant systems including IS, email and paper-based
• Record and access data in an accurate and timely manner
• Carry out a lead role within the team such as lifting equipment or PPE budget
About You

Essential:
• A full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK
• Engineering level 3 qualification or an equivalent recognised apprenticeship
• Notable post qualification mechanical or electrical on the tools experience
• Experience of working to safety procedures
Desirable:
• IOSH Working Safely or equivalent
• Experience of working on transmission equipment
• Competency with Microsoft suites including Word, Outlook and Excel
