This is a new and exciting opportunity for staff to contribute to the University's Impact and Engagement agenda as an Impact and Engagement Ambassador.

This is a new cross-departmental role that will formally unite the University's 'change-makers' with INSPIRE.

INSPIRE is a core professional support unit responsible for driving research, innovation, commercialisation, enterprise, and civic engagement across the University.

Every year for the next three years, up to twenty (20) members of staff will be appointed into a two-year ambassador role, a strategic role that will complement one of INSPIRE's four operating divisions.

Initially, it is expected that these new roles will be distributed across the four INSPIRE pillars as follows:

Research Division:
It is envisaged that five (5) 'I&E (Research) Ambassadors' will support INSPIRE's research and innovation activities.

Commercialisation Division:
It is envisaged that ten (10) 'I&E (Commercialisation) Ambassadors' will support the INSPIRE's commercialisation and intellectual property activities.

Enterprise Division:
It is envisaged that three (3) 'I&E (Enterprise) Ambassadors' will support INSPIRE's entrepreneurial, startup, spin-in and spin-out activities.

Civic Engagement Division:
It is envisaged that two (2) 'I&E (Civic Engagement) Ambassadors' will support INSPIRE's civic mission activities.
This new collaborative arrangement between INSPIRE and the University's various departments, through key members of staff who will be rewarded with an Ambassadorial role, will be essential in delivering the University's RWIF (Research Wales Innovation Fund) Strategy, as we aim to:

  • Build additional capacity and resilience to support the University diversify its income streams and reduce the University's reliance on traditional core income streams (i.e., tuition fees).
  • Further support the University's Knowledge Exchange activities that in turn contribute to Wales' economic growth and productivity.
  • Strategically engage and collaborate with a greater number of businesses, public and third sector organisations, community bodies and the wider public - to support the two points immediately above.
  • Supporting the ongoing development of the University's impact case studies and other applicable outputs for submission as part of the future Research Excellence Framework exercise in 2027/28.

This programme has been designed to support those individuals who have the desire to make a marked impact and influence on society.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) defines research impact as the demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy.

Impact is defined in two ways:

  • Economic and societal impact, which is the demonstrable contribution that excellent social and economic research has on society and the economy, and its benefits to individuals, organisations or nations.

The impact of research can include:

  • Instrumental impact, influencing the development of policy, practice or services, shaping legislation and changing behaviour
  • Conceptual impact, contributing to the understanding of policy issues and reframing debates
  • Capacity building through technical and personal skill development.
