    Job summary

    We have an excellent and exciting opportunity for a highlymotivated and suitably experienced Sister/Charge nurse to join Gate 38Orthopaedics at The Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospital Trust. Gate 38 is a 15-beddedorthopaedic ward, caring for patients who are admitted due to acute trauma orelective orthopaedic pre and post-operative care.

    We are looking for dynamic, enthusiastic, committed andaspirational person who wants to do a good job and fulfil their own personalobjectives and goals and make a difference to patients and the staff alike.

    Applications are invited from experienced Registered Nurseswho ideally have experience in caring for orthopaedic patients.

    Possession of a post, an appropriate adult nursing degree Qualificationor equivalent is essential. Completion of management/leadership developmentwould be desirable.

    Candidates must be able to demonstrate clinical expertise,management and leadership skills. It would be expected that applicants would beable to demonstrate excellent skills in clinical practice and organisationalability, together with superb communication and interpersonal skills.

    Main duties of the job

  • To develop and provide specialised nursing care to a diverse range of patients and support to other nursing staff on the ward.
  • To lead and support a team of qualified nurses, health care assistants and student team members.
  • To take charge of the ward regularly and deputise in the senior sisters absence.
  • Support the Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse in ensuring the highest standard and quality of nursing care is delivered.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    CLINICAL

    Manage the ward environment, and be responsiblefor ensuring co-ordination and delivery of skilled, effective care and safe,timely discharge.

    Assess,prioritise, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care. Superviseothers in the aforementioned functions.

    Ensuresafe, timely discharge or transfer, of patient, to wards, other hospitalsor care settings.

    Performand ensure others perform patient observations such as blood pressure, pulse,respirations, oxygen saturations, early warning score, pain score, pressurescore, temperatures, and electrocardiographs.

    Providefollow up advice, treatment and care.

    Performprocedures

    CompleteInvestigations such as blood glucose measurement, ward test urine and blood gas analysis

    Recognise and advise on Vulnerable Adult Abuseprotection issues and follow the Kirklees Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy,informing the appropriate professionals and parents/carers of concerns andprocedure as per Mid-Yorkshire Trust policy

    Initiateand participate in Advanced Life Support and cardiac arrest management.

    Maintainclear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in patients notesproviding a record of care delivered. Remind other members of the team to dolikewise.

    Administerintra venous, intra muscular, subcutaneous injections, and rectal and oralmedication.

    Providedirect patient care. Attending to patients hygiene needs such as giving andremoving bedpans and urinals. Washing incontinent, unclean and infestedpatients as required.

    Give direction, support and advice to juniorstaff.

    Acceptaccountability and responsibility for own safe clinical practice. Comply withthe NMC Code of Practice and subsequent published guidelines for practice.

    Actas the patients advocate when necessary.

    Attend the department and assume nurseleadership (in absence of Matron and Senior Sister) in the event of a majorincident being declared

    Implement and maintain control of infectionprocedures, such as hand washing, and be attentive that others do so

    COMMUNICATION

    Maintain confidentiality of informationregarding patients, families and friends at all times. Be attentive that othersdo so.

    Obtaineffective communication with the patient; their family, friends and carers; themulti-professional team; other departments and hospitals; primary care teams.This will be verbal, written, electronic and telephone and for the purpose ofexplaining diagnosis, treatment and obtaining verbal, implied and writtenconsent and follow up care to patients and family; to request investigationsand consultations from other professionals; eliciting more information tocontribute to the diagnosis and care; arranging follow up care; passinginformation. This will frequently be to patients who have complicatedemotional, physical and psychological conditions deafness, dysphasia,learning difficulties and mental health illness and will require expert use ofverbal and non-verbal communication.

    Communicate bad news, with explanations, such asdeath or severe illness to relatives/carers. Provide support for parents,family and carers.

    Recognise the needs of the patient family andfriends and ensure they receive suitable support from the appropriatestaff

    Express ideas simply, through oral or writtenpresentations to staff and others.

    Inform patients and visitors, when theirbehaviour is threatening, violent or intimidating to other patients or staffthat this is not acceptable, and ask them to stop. If they persist in theundesirable conduct ensure patient, visitor and staff safety by callingsecurity and/or police by telephone or attack alarm.

    Organising and conducting meetings, whichhave a clear purpose and outcome such as around their special interest.

    Use the information technology system to input data, request investigations and refer to other members of the hospitalteam. Code episode of patient care in the ED and therefore letter to GP.

    EDUCATIONAL

    Provide mentorship, teaching and assessmentfor pre and post registration student nurses completing documentation asrequired by universities.

    Maintain awareness of current developments in oncologynursing and issues relating to the service and assist in their implementation.

    Supervise junior staff, student nurses andancillary staff with their educational needs

    Assist with planning, delivering andparticipating in the departmental teachingprogramme

    Participate in the planning and delivery of oncologyinduction programmes and in the orientation of staff new to the department.

    To maintain own knowledge base and practiceadvanced accident and emergency skills and supervise others in their deliveryof these skills.

    To ensure own educational needs are met withinNMC recommendations.

    Assist in maintaining a teaching resource areain the department to promote evidence-based practice

    Assist with the management and development ofpreceptors and mentor group to enhance practice within the department

    Encourage an environment, which facilitatesappropriate education and training through the organisations individualappraisal system.

    Offeradvice and guidance to doctors and multi-professional team when requested.

    MANAGEMENT

    To maintain a safe environment for staff, patientsand visitors on the ward.

    Maintainsafe custody and administration of medicines and controlled drugs according tostatuary legislation, Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust and the NMC Standards forthe Administration of Medicines

    Balancenursing staff resources to peaks and troughs of activity through a rota.

    Findcover for nursing shifts in the event of sickness or absence.

    Monitorand control the use of resources through effective systems of stock control.Ordering pharmacy and sterile supplies for the oncology department.

    Raisethe awareness of the team with regard to financial and budgetary issues.

    Recommendimprovements in services, with supporting evidence, to Consultants, Matron andthe oncology team. Consult with appropriate personnel in order to effect change

    Prioritisework and manage time effectively.

    Reportand record all complaints, clinical incidents and untoward occurrences.

    Ensurethat confidentiality and safe record keeping are undertaken in accordance withthe Data Protection Act.

    Toassist in leading the development of nursing practice within the oncologydepartment.

    Accept responsibility for maintaining equipmentand stock levels, reporting any defects, hazards or shortfalls within theclinical area, ensuring that problems are followed up

    Lead, some, and participate in the developmentof guidelines, protocols, and pathways of care, using an evidence base where itis available

    Monitorand assist in managing sickness and absence

    Havean understanding of the disciplinary/grievance procedure and how and when itshould be applied

    Participate in the recruitment,selection and retention of staff.

    Attend and contribute to staff meetings.Represent the oncology ward and contribute to other meetings external or internalas requested.
