There is a need for two full time Consultantworking in the Community Mental health Team covering the area of Darlington(population 92,363), part of the South Durham Locality.
In total there are 15Adult Mental Health Consultant posts across the locality supported by medicalstaff from the rotation scheme in psychiatry, GP Registrars, F2 Doctors andSpeciality Doctors.
The team is based at West Park hospital, Darlington wherethe acute inpatient unit is also located adjacently.The Team is able to obtainexpert advice from Trust-wide specialist services which include an ADHDservice; the Autism Spectrum Assessment Team and the Eating Disorder service.
TheTeam manages adults with secondary mental health needs in Darlington. Thepost holder will need to develop effective working relationships with personnelin these services.Patients are referred to the service directly from GeneralPractitioners and other primary care mental health services, for example theIAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) service.
The post-holder will need to develop effectiveworking relationships with members of the Crisis Team and In-patient team byclosely liaising with these services when patients are referred to the crisisteam / needing alternative to hospital beds will be managed by the crisis teamand the patients who need to be in hospital will be managed by the inpatientteam.
Joint medical assessments are arrangedfor complex cases (one morning per week for each of the five communityConsultants. Two patients will be seen each morning).The post-holder will need to develop effectiveworking relationships with members of the Crisis Team and In-patient Team byclosely liaising with these services when patients are referred to the crisisteam / needing alternative to hospital beds will be managed by the crisis teamand the patients who need to be in hospital will be managed by the inpatientteam.
The Trust provides specialist services for substance misuse problems.The post holder will be expectedto provide appropriate supervision to junior medical staff and non-medicalprescribers within the team. The post holder will be expected to havefamiliarity with all important, relevant legislation affecting the Adult MentalHealth population. Daytime on call once per week 9am-5pm for Mental Health Actassessments.

(MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of gaining CCT
Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
