Job summary:


The Joint Intelligence Organisation leads on intelligence assessment and development of the UK intelligence community's analytical capability, supporting the work of the Joint Intelligence Committee and National Security Council.


The Joint Intelligence Organisation incorporates the Assessments Staff and the Professional Head of Intelligence Assessment, both supported by extensive capability functions.

The Assessments Staff consists of intelligence analysts directly appointed or seconded from a wide range of departments and disciplines.

It is responsible for drafting assessments of situations and issues of current concern, providing warnings of threats to British interests, and identifying and monitoring countries at risk of instability.


The Assessments Staff draws upon a range of intelligence and insight, including from the intelligence agencies, diplomatic reporting, and a wide range of open sources and datasets.

We connect with experts across HMG, outside government, and internationally. The Joint Intelligence Committee agrees our most load-bearing assessments before they are circulated to Ministers and senior officials.


The Deputy Directors of the Assessments Staff report to the Directors of Assessments Staff, who in turn report to the Chair of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC).

Job description:


Lead & Manage


JIO's core business is to deliver high quality, relevant assessments that inform decision-making by the Prime Minister, National Security Council and senior officials.

Your leadership skills will provide clarity, direction and support to your diverse team of analysts towards that goal.


You will exercise excellent analytic leadership, empowering staff to work to their strengths and providing stretching opportunities for individuals' development to help them build professional skills.

Managing a team from a variety of backgrounds and organisations, you will ensure all have a clear understanding of how their experience in JIO supports their chosen career path, working with them to help advance their career goals while securing the best performance outcomes for the business.


Delivering Excellence in Assessment


You will be responsible for ensuring that your team's products are delivered to high standards of analytic tradecraft and draw on the best available evidence base.

You will ensure JIO products are engaging and useable through creative use of data visualisation and product formats.

JIO is often required to deliver high quality assessment at pace, particularly during crisis situations.

You will operate effectively under pressure to deliver a quality service at pace, ensuring our analysis is delivered on time and has maximum impact with decision-makers.


Delivering Impact


You will have a senior representative role and will regularly have opportunities to deputise for the Directors of Assessments Staff at senior meetings on foreign and security policy, as well as other key engagements.

You will deliver impact by presenting JIO's analysis to senior UK and international partners with credibility and authority, drawing on strong foundations of expertise.


You will embed strong customer focus and excellent stakeholder engagement across your team, taking personal responsibility for ensuring JIO's analysis is value-adding and impactful.

You will engage closely and actively with policy customers and decision-makers to identify where and when JIO analysis will have greatest impact, based on a strong understanding of policy priorities.
