Description

Why should I choose Somerset County Council?

In Somerset, our focus is on promoting independence for everyone - so that people can do the things that matter most to them and live the life they want to live.

We are doing things differently to put the person at the centre of everything we do and to look creatively at how we can meet people's needs in the community.

In return, you'll work in a
dynamic, supportive social care environment, managed by social work managers with mental health expertise - most are still practising AMHPs.

Monthly supervision, annual appraisal, training and development will be provided to ensure you have the knowledge, skills and support to undertake your role.

We adopt a
'grow your own' approach to staff development and progression, striving to ensure all staff are well-prepared for the next step when the time is right.

This includes the opportunity to train as Social Workers and Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHP).

If you're looking for a place where your work truly matters - where YOU truly matter - we might be just right for you.

What will I be doing?

We're working to improve the lives of people here in Somerset - and you'll be a key part of that.

You will work alongside Social Workers and Approved Mental Health Professionals within a community mental health social work team in
Taunton.

Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Working with individuals, families and our community networks to agree creative solutions to help people remain as independent as possible within their communities.
  • Making connections in the area, working in partnership with local organisations and a range of professionals, including health colleagues, to achieve the best outcomes for people.
  • Providing really useful information and advice about mental health social care to people and their families. You will have conversations with people to identify what they are worried about or what they want to achieve, what support they already have and what they need. You will advise them on the best local services and solutions to suit the person's needs.
  • Encouraging people to be independent, to help them grow their confidence and make the most of the support available in their local community.

You will be expected to be flexible in your work base and to be willing to travel within the area of Somerset where you work, visiting people in their own homes.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We are looking for people who are not afraid to do things differently to create support that is better for people.

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be.

You will need to be:

  • Innovative and forward thinking
  • Motivated and passionate
  • Creative and solution focused to support people to be independent
  • Able to make things happen and work at pace
  • Able to travel around the county (and sometimes outside) to carry out assessments and reviews.
We're proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset.

An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

What will I be offered in return?

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management.

As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:

  • Generous annual leave and flexible working options
  • Ongoing support from our dedicated Learning & Development team
  • Development opportunities
  • Local Government pension scheme
  • Optional pension enhancement through our additional voluntary contribution scheme
  • Employee assistance and support offering a variety of wellbeing services to support a healthy work/life balance and lifestyle
  • A flexible benefits platform including cycle to work and health screening schemes
- 'My staff shop' which offers excellent discounts at a variety of retailers including; cinemas, restaurants, clothing stores and insurance providers

  • Gym discounts
  • Discounted lease car options via salary sacrifice, along with discounts on fuel
  • Generous relocation allowance
  • Access to the Blue Light Card which offers thousands of amazing discounts online and on the high street for social care staff

Anything else I should know?
The salary for the role is Grade 12, ranging from £24,496 to £27,852 per annum.

From 1 April 2023 the County and District councils in Somerset will be replaced by a new single unitary authority - Somerset Council.

It's an exciting time to join us as we work together with the four district councils to deliver the new council for Somerset.
