    Description

Action Tutoring is an education charity working in partnership with schools, to support disadvantaged pupils to achieve, through English and maths tuition. Volunteering with us is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community. As a volunteer tutors you will be working with pupils in primary and secondary schools across Bristol, increasing their subject knowledge, confidence and study skills.

By volunteering with us for just one hour a week , at a time and a location that suits you, you can help to improve the future prospects of young people in your community, changing their lives and helping to ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future.

You will be able to use and develop skills, such as time management, interpersonal and communication skills that will also support your studies and will add enhance your CV. You will also be having a direct impact on a young person's academic attainment – an independent evaluator found that having seven or more sessions with us added the value of up to 1⁄2 a GCSE grade to that pupil's results – and you'll see these changes first hand.

It's a great way for you to meet like-minded people and do a bit of networking yourselves, as we recruit volunteers from all backgrounds and of all ages, from 18 to 80, to work with us. Our pupils love getting to know you and your experiences give them a real insight into the wider world.

As a tutor you will attend a specially designed training session to tell you everything you need to know about tutoring. You will also be using structured resources, developed by curriculum specialists, to deliver your tutoring.

Once trained you'll be able to select a programme in a school and time slot that fits with your schedule. You'll then be paired with a couple of pupils and be responsible for tutoring them once a week, for a term. There will be a member of the Action Tutoring team on hand every week to support you throughout. We can reimburse your travel expenses up to the value of £5 per session and provide a reference to validate your commitment.

As well as Bristol Action Tutoring also operates across Liverpool, London, Birmingham, Brighton, and Sheffield and we recruit throughout the year. We are looking for tutors who have or are studying for a degree and have an A or B grade A Level, or equivalent, in the subject they wish to tutor or a related subject.

Children from lower-income families are less likely to achieve academically than their better-off peers. Action Tutoring is a charity that works to level the playing field.

We are looking for volunteers to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in maths or English. As a volunteer, you'll:

Work with 1-3 pupils to improve their English and maths, either in-person or online

Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just one hour a week

Support either primary or secondary school-aged pupils

Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions

Good grades improve future prospects, opening the door to a wider range of opportunities. If you enjoy working with children and are passionate about social equality, you can make a tangible difference by volunteering for an hour a week.
