The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) implements the government's maritime safety policy in the United Kingdom and works to prevent the loss of life and occurrence of pollution on the coast and at sea.

  • Safer lives. Safer Ships. Cleaner Seas._
Our vision is to be a world-leading organisation, accelerating the transition to sustainable shipping with non-negotiable safety standards. We put our people, our customers and our planet at the heart of everything we do.

Job description:

The MCA promotes occupational health and safety and decent living and working conditions for seafarers, in accordance with international Conventions and standards and industry best practice.

Seafarers and fishermen are vulnerable workers as they work away from the normal support networks and have less access to the enforcement mechanisms available to the workforce ashore.

As the Seafarer Living and Working Conditions Policy Specialist, it will be your responsibility to assist with the maintenance of appropriate regulation and supporting documentation for the implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC), the ILO Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (ILO188).

You will also support other ILO-related work, including the development and dissemination of policy and guidance to stakeholders on ILO matters and wider seafarer policy.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the MCA and take on an interesting and varied role with a range of duties.

There will be lots of stakeholder engagement, internal and external, providing you with the chance to meet and build relationships with different people at all grades.

This is a rewarding role where you will have the opportunity to make a difference and improve the living and working conditions for seafarers across the maritime sector.

This role will be based in the Southampton HQ.

MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work.

Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

Some UK and European travel including overnight stays required, including occasional one-week meetings in Geneva (weekend travel).

A passport valid for international travel is required.

This post is offered on a Fixed Term Appointment (FTA) basis until

  • Working with stakeholders, develop policy on any proposals for amendments to the Conventions, or related issues arising from UK implementation of the Conventions. Representing UK policy at ILO meetings and meetings with external bodies.
