This exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Strategic Category Management position in the Strategic Category Management team within the Medicines Procurement and Efficiencies team which is part of the Medicines Value & Access Directorate - Chief Financial Officer Group.


The role is part of a team of 14 who are responsible for category procurement delivery, aligned with the NHS priorities and delivery of savings.

The role will have a small team of people to manage and help to deliver the String of Pearls pipeline.


As a Head of Strategic Category Management, the post holder will have responsibility for leading innovative and complex projects within a portfolio of categories and operational management of the associated resources within the Strategic Category Management Team.


Key aspects of the role will be to:

  • Significantly contribute to, and where appropriate lead, the development and roll out of Strategic Category Management (SCM) projects, working with key stakeholders to identify and prioritise opportunities for smart procurement of medicines and other technologies for the benefit of the NHS.
  • Responsible for making recommendations, providing advice and able to prepare strategic reports/briefings as required
  • Identify examples of national and international best category management practice and to ensure that the team benefits from relevant innovations and follows legal procurement processes
  • Lead the development of medicine and/or technology category specific plans, aligning clinical and commercial priorities and identifying commercial levers to support implementation of change.


The post holder will need to have strong experience of smart / complex procurements and need to demonstrate the ability to influence across a wide portfolio and multiple internal and external stakeholders.
