Description

We are looking to recruit an Environmental Advisor to join the project team working as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade East Alliance.

The position will be based at our Cross Green offices in Leeds or the project hub near to Sherburn in Elmet with a requirement to travel between multiple sites situated between Leeds and York.

This project is not just about improving the railway. It's also about enhancing daily lives and improving the communities along the route.

As an Environmental Advisor, working on this project brings a unique set of opportunities and challenges around environmental protection, carbon reduction, biodiversity and social value.

The role is diverse and requires extensive internal and external stakeholder management.

This role is responsible for supporting the delivery of the environmental and sustainability related project activities on this high-profile NR Project.


The role provides support to the Environment & Sustainability Manager and assists in the delivery of strategic Alliance environmental activities and the sustainability training, coaching, mentoring and education of the project teams.


Key accountabilities:


  • Support the Sustainability Manager in providing comprehensive sustainability support to the Alliance and its supply chain partners.
  • Ensure that appropriate alliancing behaviours and 'best for project' approaches are always adopted, leading by example in the pursuit of successful delivery of the Programme to the benefit of all Alliance Members.
  • Drive the delivery of targets and objectives set out in the TRU Sustainability Delivery Plan including those linked to: Biodiversity Net Gain, Weather Resilience, Carbon Reduction and CEEQUAL.
  • Take ownership of environmental consents that can be delivered in house, reducing the reliance on framework providers.
  • Provide support and guidance to project and delivery teams with regards to environmental management, in particular waste, pollution control, noise & nuisance, ecology, carbon & energy.
  • Ensure project and delivery teams comply with the internal management systems, legislation and client requirements, including the collection, analysis and reporting of data to measure performance against objectives and targets driving the Alliance to continuously improve.
  • Drive sustainability values and behaviours putting them at the core in, supporting the Alliance culture in all aspects of the programme.
  • Produce contract statistical environmental performance information.
  • Undertake environmental audits to ensure, where necessary, corrective plans are successfully developed and implemented.
  • Encourage the best environmental practices and increase environmental awareness and reduce the likelihood of environmental incidents.
  • Manage Ecologists, noise consultants and other environmental specialisms provided by the alliance framework partners
  • Produce GRIP deliverables namely Community Impact Assessments (CIA), Environmental & Social Appraisals (ESA) and Environmental & Social Management Plans (ESMP), Sustainability Delivery Plans.

Skills & experience:


  • Practitioner level membership of an environmental body (e.g. IEMA)
  • Previous experience in a similar role on major construction or rail projects
  • Experience of leading on the following sustainability themes; Biodiversity Net Gain, Carbon Reduction, Weather Resilience, Social Value, CEEQUAL
  • Experience of alliance working. Be able to overcome the difficulties and bring out the positives of the joint venture approach.
  • Experience of effective implementation of ISO1400
  • Relevant Network Rail Standards (015)
  • Experience of liaising with regulatory authorities, the general public and the client.
  • High level numeracy and IT skills, with proven ability to expertly use a range of relevant software e.g. MS Office.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a diverse workload.
  • Good communication skills and ability to form positive internal and external relationships
  • Personal resilience and ability to thrive in a challenging and fastmoving environment.
  • The role sits within the Alliance sustainability team which is part of the SHES function. The role also works as part of the wider TRU East team, working collaboratively with other Alliances and delivery partners which is a critical aspect of the role.
